Interview with Ugochukwu Kingsley Ani

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Actually, whenever i am not writing, what i do is to read what other writers have written. i read a lot, and then i work too, for i am a legal practitioner in my country.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Well, the basic answer is that I usually search out for the specific author that I want to read the work, and then I buy them or I download them, if they are for free. I also use the Goodreads Recommendation feature, searching them out by genre, and then, sometimes, a particular title of a book will leap out of the page at me, or a stunning cover will grab at my attention, and I will then have to read that book. It all depends. . .
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I do. It was after I had read the novel 'A Glimpse of Stocking. I became so charged with the passion to write that i had to go and pick up my pen and start writing. The first story I had written was 'Harvest'. I remember that book fondly because i had written the book when i was barely fourteen, and the first agent i had taken the book to in Nigeria had never believed that a young fourteen-year old boy could have written that book. He had thought it was impossible. But then . . .
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, not really. But one of the stories that made an indelible impression in my psyche was Henry Rider Haggard's 'She'. It gripped me for weeks on end. . .
What is your writing process?
I usually have the basic storyline i want to work on either in my head, or written down_ but mostly in my head. And then I go from there. I have a vision of what the finished product will look like, but i can deviate from this at any time.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
She, A Glimpse of Stocking, Forbidden Fruit, The Queen of the Damned, Carrie. . . the reason why these books are my favorites is because of the fact that they are among the few books that have succeeded in moving my emotions. i am a very emotional person, and it is either i am moved very much, or i am not moved AT ALL.
What do you read for pleasure?
i read a lot of novels. . . and then there is the internet where i glean a hell lot of information pertaining to different subject matters.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read with a phone. . . but i prefer a tablet because of the screen size of the device.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Blogging, I think, free ebooks, and then the online social media. But i think that the ebook thing works better.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
i grew up in the eastern part of Nigeria. And the area where I had lived in actually is a place filled with stories and a big history that begs the pen. Chinua Achebe himself_ one of the worldwide bestselling authors of all time with his book Things Fall Apart_ also took note of this.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That there is someone out there that will read what i have to offer and like it well enough to read it through. It means that i am doing something
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean the whole world to me, because, without them, there is no me
What are you working on next?
A psychological thriller
Who are your favorite authors?
I cannot really say, because then i will have to die of a heart attack to check through this
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that you can do something . . . be something. . . that you can contribute to the Society
When did you first start writing?
At the age of thirteen
