Interview with April D Brown

What's the story behind your latest book?
Trails Through the Fault Lines began as Trails Through the Garbage Mines, a look at what future archeologists would find in our landfills.

This led to the question: How would the archeologists not already know the answers?

The answer: The world as we know it had been destroyed.

Trails Through the Fault Lines shows part of the "forgetting" process.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My novels and novellas are more of a classical style. They lack hyper action. They lack romance. Characters think before they act. Some of favorite authors are: Charles Dickens, and Louisa May Alcott.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The ability to explore places I can never go on my own, and share those experiences with others.
What are you working on next?
Coffee, Tea, and Gluten Free, will be a mixed set. One fiction novel of a young adult dreaming of life, and being pushed back due to having to live gluten free. And a companion allergy free cookbook.
Who are your favorite authors?
Classics: Charles Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, Edward Eager, Madeleine L'Engle.
Modern: Terry Brooks, T.A. Barron, Robert Asprin, Douglas Adams.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, gardening, cooking, sewing, cleaning, and walking.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Molly's Second Chance. Seemed like a long story for a ghost story. I think it is a 1,000 word story. Doesn't seem like much now.
What is your writing process?
1. Place a story nugget in the percolator.
2. Let it simmer.
3. Add notes as they occur.
4. Research and fill in character and background information.
5. Write the first draft.
6. Second draft has to double the first draft.
7. Start the edit process.
When did you first start writing?
I don't remember not writing. I cherish high school poetry.

I regret destroying the novel I began in high school. I figured I'd never have time to complete it if I worked for a living.
How has life affected your writing?
I attended more schools than I would recommend. I graduated with a degree that wasn't even worth minimum wage. I've worked more minimum wage jobs than I would recommend while trying to find on that paid a living wage. All of my health problems have led to a deeper empathy than even my college degree could provide.
