Interview with Victoria Roberts Siczak

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and raised in upstate New York, on the Oneida River that through various systems, channels into Oneida Lake, and Lake Ontario. There were not many children around to play with, besides my four male cousins, so much of my time was spent reading. My father always bought a book for my birthday, and Christmas, and as I grew, so did my preferences. Soon I was receiving John Steinbeck, Oscar Wilde, and the complete works of William Shakespeare. I wrote short stories, and had a few published in the school newspapers, and a few poems were published in poetry books. I still love to read, everything, although I admit to being a fan of science fiction, fantasy and paranormal reads. Although I've written two mystery suspense thrillers, I am trying my first attempt at science fiction!
When did you first start writing?
I think around the second grade, I would write little stories. If my parents were to busy to read them, I would line up my barbie dolls, and act out the story through them! I loved writing poetry, and I would write about anything, my dog, the moon, the river,ect... I think I was the only child in forth grade who loved the idea of keeping a journal, which was our assignment. To this day, I keep a little pad and pencil with me, to jot down any ideas that pop into my head. Now for Christmas, I received books from everyone, along with notepads, pencils, and lots of support and encouragement from my family.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Liaisons: Meeting Connecting Committing," is about an online dating service where a person can be matched to their idea of the perfect mate. However this perfect person suffers from an affliction or disorder, that inhibits their finding love in the conventional manner. I thought of this story thinking of some members of my family that have OCD, ADHD, social disorders, and a special friend who has PTSD. Even though they are all attractive, and have much to offer, it takes a special person to acknowledge their condition, and love them all the more because of it. But to complicate matters, there is a serial killer loose in the city, and the police come to believe that the dating service, and the people involved, might have something to do with the brutal murders. This is just a story of course, and now I am moving on to a different genre.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Traditional publishers make you wait to long, before they even answer you back. After waiting two years, continuously making changes to my first book "To Risk Extinction," I was informed that the editor did not think the book would sell, because there were so many mystery thrillers on the market. I met several wonderful indie authors on facebook and twitter, and I thought, well why not? I had my first and second novel published independently, and will probably do the same for the next one.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a great place to list your book for all electronic readers. When I first published, I sole two copies in an hour. I will definitely publish my next book on smashwords. They have links you can most to facebook, your blog, where someone can just click on the link, and preview your book. I have downloaded more books on smashwords, then amazon, and barnes and noble.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
This is easy. Telling my stories. Although its wonderful to profit from writing, I just have to put my stories down on paper, or rather computer. I love to see my characters take on a life of their own, and they become like friends and family. If one person reads and enjoys the book, that's all that matters to me!
What do your fans mean to you?
Hm, not sure I have many besides friends and family, but I would be pleased knowing that I provided entertainment to anyone who read one of my books. I am just an average person, who likes to tell stories, and I would not like to think of having fans, compared to having friends. I love to meet people, even if its on a social network, because I love learning, reading, and communicating with everyone around the globe!
What are you working on next?
My first attempt at science fiction, paranormal, fantasy. "Paradoxical I : Angels and Apparitions," is about several different scientists and researchers looking for explanations of strange appearances, disappearances, and phenomena that occurs around certain regions, or people that some strange things have happened to. To complicate matters, there is a team of paranormal researchers, an Association for the research of phenomena, and a team of quantum physicists, who believes everything can be explained through quantum mathematics and mechanics. Then there is the Catholic diocese, who examines the supernatural aspect of the events. There is a lot of research involved with this book, even though it's fiction, I want to make it seem possible!
Who are your favorite authors?
John Steinbeck, Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, H.G. Wells.
Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Stephanie Meyers, Mary Sheldon, Robin Cook
Walt Whitman, David Frost, Emily Dickerson
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?! My family, and friends, and the thought of a new day! I have many stories to tell, and it makes me happy to talk to my characters everyday, and get them out of bed!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work as a school busdriver, and I substitute teach some days. My two daughters are married, and raising families of their own, and I just love being Gramma every chance I get. I read, swim, and take my terrier beagle mix for long walks in the parks daily.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Smashwords, and amazon. They make it easy to find any genre you might be interested in, and you can read the preview before you decide to buy the book.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I think I was about seven years old. I used to sit with my Grandmother on our dock while she fished. Every evening during the summer, an old dog used to swim up the river to help ease his arthritis and everyone would call out to him, but he never stopped. I wrote a little story about how he swam to China and back, (remember I was only seven)and brought back a little China doll that I had been wanting.
What is your writing process?
I jot down little ideas here and there. Outline a chapter, do research, write it, edit it, reedit it, sometimes delete it, and when satisfied, I outline the next chapter. I tried outlining the whole book, but never stuck to the structure!
