Interview with Val Schilber

Where were you born and grow up?
Born in Escalon, California, in 1930 and grew up there and graduated from Escalon Union High School.
Tell us a bit more....
In my first marriage, Jay and I ran a Fire and Casualty Insurance business in Escalon, called Sharp Insurance. In my second marriage to Jim, married an avid sailor and sailed from Honolulu, HI to San Francisco, CA, on a 47' custom Stephens yacht, in 20 days. I eventually studied and became an Interior Decorator, first out of Stockton, CA, at Jordan and Bowman Interiors, for approximately 3yrs. Worked with Ruth Mitchell at RM Design as a decorator in Modesto, CA and in other shops in Riverbank and Escalon, CA. Eventually had own shop as Main Street Design, in Escalon. Although retired, I still dabble in it when asked.
Tell us more about your life...
Married first husband, Jay Sharp and had five children and stayed with him for 15yrs but divorced him due to his alcoholism. Had brief second marriage and then another divorce. Then I married in 1970 Jerry Schilber, and he had four children and then we had an adventurous life for 40yrs, until he died 2011.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Enjoying life in my new home, making new friends. I sold my home I had for 44 years in Escalon and moved to a retirement center in Modesto in October 2014, and was able to decorate my "apartment" the way I wanted it. Lovely people and most happy place I've lived in years, very welcoming people. Way beyond my expectations. And finishing my 1st book.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Living in a small town is so restrictive. Not stimulating. The character Julie in Above All, getting out of town relates to how I felt and as I matured in my marriages and own life experiences. My sailing experiences and my background in Interior Decorating, is a big factor in this book and my life.
When did you first start writing?
I started at the age of 75.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I have characters and plots in my mind and have several story lines going and can't wait to put them on paper.

Anthony raced to the marina, pulling Julie by the hand down the dock. She started undressing as he unlocked the hatch. She scampered inside and stepped out of her dress. She lit a candle as he closed the hatch ... Michelle and Sam were uneasily waiting for her when Anthony delivered her to the hotel. She offered no explanation. They asked for none.
