Interview with Valenciya Lyons

What inspired you to write your latest book, Flawed and Dangerous?
The prevalence of bullying inspired me. There are parents who actually have to homeschool their children because it's so bad. Some people blame social media but it's not facebook or twitter; it's the people behind the screen who are attacking their victims that's causing the problems. I like to write about things like this because I have seen the damage that can be done to a person when they're bullied or have low self esteem coupled with that. This isn't a typical book about someone who's bullied and who just sits around and takes it. I've included major twists in this one. I wanted to go all out because I'm not sure when I'll be writing about this again. I may try my hand at more romance or something; but in the end, I know I'll probably end up coming back to the young adult genre because it's my favorite one to write about.
How do you approach cover design?
I cannot design a cover to save my life! So I use to search for a cover that captures the book’s theme and grabs the reader’s attention.
What are you currently working on next?
I have several stories that I'm currently developing and researching at the moment.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading any book that captures my attention; however, I am a magazine junkie. I was a fashion major in college so I love to flip through the pages of Life & Style and In Touch Weekly to see what the celebs are wearing. I also read Ebony, Essence, People StyleWatch, Elle, and Marie Claire on a regular basis.
Who is an inspirational person in your life?
My grandmother. She’s a very strong woman who has overcome many battles in her life. She’s taught me to be strong and to work hard in life to get to where I want to be. And it’s working.
What’s the name of the last book you read?
Black Love White Lies by Genesis Woods
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Genesis Woods, Kiki Swinson, Elizabeth Nelson, and Mary Monroe. There are really just too many to list!
What is the one thing you cannot live without?
Sweet tea. I need a glass of tea right now! Oh and I cannot forget about my cappuccino.
What is your favorite holiday?
What are some of your favorite shows?
Anything on the ID Network. I love watching Judge Judy and Judge Mathis. I’m also a huge fan of 2 Broke Girls. They always make me laugh.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Reading anything that catches my attention, browsing books online and in stores, stargazing, and baking desserts
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
After I’ve purchased a book from authors that I like, I will randomly browse for other books.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I picture myself writing more books with a pen in one hand and a glass of tea or cappuccino in the other. I’m not married nor do I have children so I may be chasing a toddler or two and preparing dinner for a husband. After I tuck them all into bed, I’ll probably try to squeeze in writing another chapter or two.
What’s next for Valenciya Lyons?
More ebooks and one day a clothing boutique. I still want to put my fashion degree to use.
