Interview with Verneda Davis

Published 2014-06-09.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend my time reading, taking care of my children, shopping and catching up on TV shows. I'm also involved in church. I'm very laid back.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! The first story I wrote was in 3rd grade and let's just say, it was something that a 3rd grader had NO business writing about!
What is your writing process?
I usually create a rough draft and I have to write my ideas down before I type anything.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of Christian fiction novels by Reshonda Tate-Billingsley, and Kimberla Lawson-Roby.
When did you first start writing?
My mom and grandma said I have been writing since I was 4 years old.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
The Kindle of course! But, I still desire to read a physical copy of a book. I need to feel and smell it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is that you can create all kinds of people and places and even blend yourself in your characters. I love the freedom that I get from writing and how I express myself.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fan base is greatly appreciated. The fact that there are people standing behind me rooting for more is an awesome feeling. I thank them for granting me more reasons to write and for sharing my talent with the world.
Who are your favorite authors?
It may seem strange but Edgar Allan Poe is my favorite author right after Langston Hughes. Poe was a mysterious and strange man. His writings depicted that but he too had a story to tell about his world.
Where did you grow up and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the city of Saint Louis and this actually caused me to think outside of the box. I knew there was more out there than what was around me so I went into others worlds and communities in my stories.
