Interview with Verla Ell Rey

Describe your desk
A small plain wooden desk, with one of my paintings of a jungle island scene hanging above it. On the desk is a small white lamp, a thick, curved piece of turquoise sea glass with bubbles in it, and a pearl shell with three loose South Sea pearls.
When did you first start writing?
When I heard my own voice inside me that I did not want to ignore.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to express with clarity the magnitude of what I feel within.
What is your writing process?
I allow the surrounding internal and external 'noise' to fall away so I can focus on the clear voice that speaks effortlessly from within. I like to read over what I've written out loud with resonance, as if I'm speaking to a crowd.
What do you read for pleasure?
Usually non-fiction and biographies.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Black Beauty, as a six year old. I must have read that book fifteen times from start to finish. I loved horses as a little girl. I also loved becoming completely immersed in the different world of each book I read to the point where I lived in it in a way.
