Interview with Victoria Schwimley

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Jamestown, NY, but I was raised in Southern California. My mother was a homemaker, and my father was a machinist. There were five natural born children, plus my parents raised my father's three younger siblings, so you can imagine there wasn't much money for extra-curricular activities. I busied myself with with gymnastics and lots! of reading. I had a vivid imagination and would spend hours reading. My mother loved to read, also, so she and I would sit in the living room and read away.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first rough draft (Coveting Love) when I was in my late twenties, but my first stories were told to my children during long car rides home from work and often at bedtime. They loved the stories and would beg for them. I didn't get the courage to try to publish anything until my youngest child became old enough to read adult fiction. That was sometime in my forties. She was helping me clean out my closest and found my manuscript stuffed back in the corner. She wasn't aware that I had ever written anything and begged to read it. To my surprise, she loved it and encouraged me to do something with it. I dedicated that novel to her.
What's the story behind your latest book?
That would be Twisted Faith. This book is dedicated to my daughter, Jamie and my second cousin, Kaylee. Both these women are single mothers who have been through many tribulations with their children. In church one morning, our pastor told a story about a desperate man who saw the light on in the church, just as it was growing dark, and called from the parking lot begging for help. This story inspired me to write something about this. I wanted to show people the possibility of how God might intervene in times of trouble. Although Abigail's situation in no way resembles the things my daughter and cousin have gone through, and they both come from a loving, caring family, they inspired me to write Abigail s story.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I first submitted Coveting Love, I was picked up by an agent on my third query. The experience did not go well, and that's not to ding the agency business at all; I'm sure there are thousands of fabulous agents out there. When my contract ended, I decided to try going straight to a publisher. That experience was a disaster and my first novel, which should have been my pride and joy, ended up being published with many errors in it. My husband told me he had heard of the self-publishing platform and suggested I look into it. I was just finishing my second novel and thought I'd give it a try. I loved the experience and people raved about the story. When my publisher offered to sell me back the rights to my first novel, I jumped on the chance, and re-published as an Indie author. I now have five indie books. That's not to say I wouldn't be open to working with an agent or publisher if the right one came my way, but for now I'm happy working as an Indie author.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Swashwords is great! I love only having to format my book once for multiple formats and distribution. Smashwords is also widely known, so if I say I publish with Smashwords, most people know of whom I am speaking.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I am a storyteller. When a story is in my head, I can not rest until is it on paper.I can make things happen as my thoughts want. Sometimes it's happy, and sometimes tragic, but either way I can give my readers something to think about.
What do your fans mean to you?
Without my fans, my writing would just be words. I love to hear from fans. I want to know what they think, even if they dislike something. I often receive emails from fans wanting to know when my next novel will be out. Then I know I'm doing my job well.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on Lacy's End. It's the story of a teenage girl and her mother, both trying to survive in an abusive home. It shows their struggles and triumphs as they try to escape the home and fight against a beast who won't accept no for an answer. It may be a rough story for some, and I apologize for that, but the situations shown in the story are necessary to get the full impact of their life. It's also a bit hopeful and uplifting as Lacy gets help from an unlikely friend.
Who are your favorite authors?
I anxiously await new releases from Jodi Picoult, Tess Geritsen, John Grisham, J.A. Jance, and James Patterson. However, since becoming an Indie author, I've been trying novels from little known authors and finding how much I enjoy stepping out and seeing what's out there. I always recommend to a friend when I read one I really like.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
It's my quiet time of the day, so getting out of bed is not a problem. In the morning it's just me, my coffee, and a computer with my latest work-in-progress on it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have three wonderful children who have blessed me with seven beautiful grandchildren (number eight due to arrive in December). They keep me busy, but in addition to that I love to sew, which I suppose is natural since I love to create. When I'm not doing indoor activities, I love to camp and hike.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have an Amazon Kindle. I get many of my ebooks books through that. My local library also has thousands of ebooks available and send recommendations to me based on what I've previously read and liked.
