Interview with Andrew Saul
Published 2017-03-29.
When did you first start writing?
My initial foray into the world of writing was for my AS level in General Studies! At about 16 years of age. If it hadn't been for my 3000 word essay on the history of firearms and militaria, I would have flunked the course! My essay dragged me up from an unmentionable grade to a 'B'!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love being able to let my imagination run riot! I also find writing to be very calming, and frequently come up with new plot ideas while doing other activities such as ironing shirts or visiting a museum! (To mention two memorable ones!)
What is your writing process?
I've heard other authors state that they write their books in blocks. I've not tried the method, but feel that if you're just getting the exciting stuff down onto the page (so to speak) and use filler to bind it all together at the end, the book might seem disjointed to the reader. With Draecyn and with my current book, I'm using a beginning to end approach. I'll plan out what I want to convey over the next couple of chapters and write it down, draft edit it and walk away! I'll revisit it a few minutes later, and re-read it back to myself. Repeat for as long as necessary! :D
What are you working on next?
My next book continues from where Draecyn finishes. My intention at the minute is to write a trilogy but if there is higher demand (crosses fingers!) I'd love to write more in the series :)
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first 'Proper' story I wrote was a Dungeons and Dragons adventure for a bunch of friends. After many months of battling a variety of different monsters, with an ultimate goal of saving the planet, they emerged triumphant (with a few losses along the way!)
Who are your favorite authors?
In no particular order: J.R.R. Tolkein, Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, Anne Rice, Douglas Adams, Bernard Cornwell and R.A. Salvatore to name just a few! I don't have a low number of distinct favourites, as all of the above, and others, have such a beautiful and eloquent mastery of storytelling :)
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember which was the first book in the series that I read, but the Adventure series by Willard Price were the first books that I devoured in a matter of days!! Two of which were entitled 'Underwater Adventure' and 'Diving Adventure' Which I am certain had an influence on my passion for SCUBA and Commercial diving later in life :)
What do you read for pleasure?
I love allsorts! If the plotline is good (but not too overworked and intricate!) and the book is fast paced, I'll enjoy it. I generally read Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre, but am happy reading books from a wide variety of genres.
