Interview with William Songy

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My father is an avid outdoorsman, so we grew up on the water and in the woods in Southeast Louisiana. I was a certified open water SCUBA diver at 13 years old. We were always out in the deep water of the Gulf of Mexico, in the lake, on a beach, or on the river.

In the book Open Windows, the area of the Pearl River that I used in the story is a place where my friends and I spent a lot of time fishing and skiing. We made a lot of good memories there it was only fitting that I should include those places in my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing almost 20 years ago. I had a really vivid and crazy dream one night and I just had to write it down. After I started working on it, I found writing to be an awesome escape. It was nice to disappear for a while when writing.
Who are your favorite authors?
Tom Clancy, Dean Koontz, and Clive Cussler.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. When I was in first or second grade I put together this illustrated story of a man on a boat in the lake. He was trying to catch crabs. Well, he nets this crab named Crunch. But, Crunch gets away from the man and gets back into the lake. The man gets upset about losing the crab and decided to eat crawfish instead. My mom kept the original and now I have it.
How do you approach cover design?
I want covers that stand out. I want it to look like the poster for the movie as if it were being shown at the theater.
What do you read for pleasure?
I work and study a lot. It is not often that I read for pleasure. But, when I do, I like Tom Clancy and Dean Koontz novels. You can't go wrong with either of them.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I had this intense dream. I woke up in the morning and the dream was so real that I had to wake my wife up to make sure everything as okay. I told a friend about it and the story shook him up a bit. That was when I decided to work on writing it down.

The dream was the basis of the main characters, but some of the content had to be altered to make the story better.
What are you working on next?
I have two projects that I am working on. I have always been fascinated with the Ark of the Covenant. So, I couldn’t help but write an action/adventure story about tracking it down. I wrote the first draft almost twenty years ago. I will be revisiting that one.

I am also working on a project I have titled One Night with A Stranger. It is not romance, but something that will be a feel-good, Christmas, Hallmark Chanel kind of story.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first novel that I read from cover to cover was titled The Boogens. It was written by Charles E. Sellier Jr. and published in 1981. The impact was that it was interesting enough to keep me reading.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Bible, for obvious reasons.
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
Debt of Honor and Without Remorse by Tom Clancy.
Dragon Tears by Dean Koontz.
Published 2017-03-21.
