Interview with Nunzia Castaldo

Published 2015-12-10.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing at the age of six, when I wrote a poem.
What's the story behind your latest book?
When I lost my parents after three months of each other my life was completely transformed; the suffering endured and the tragic way in which they died, have grown in me the desire to give importance only to the things that have real value. I wrote two novels of fiction: "All In Mid August" and "Diamond" in which I felt the need to tell the date suffering from loneliness.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
In my life I have had to face the professional challenges always alone. I did not get any help because I come from a humble family. This has matured in me a stubborn. I am always the challenge to myself; publish on Smashwords makes me feel completely at ease. I will never cease to thank Mark and all his colleagues for this.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Without publications on Smashwords I had trouble seeing my E-book for sale on sites such as La Feltrinelli and Mondadori
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I write I enter an imaginary world in which the characters come to life and end up where they want them to take me; In order to post is to share this experience with all the friends who love to read fiction stories or poetic verses that bring out details of human life and nature.
What do your fans mean to you?
Every person I meet along my life: friends, colleagues or acquaintances, they remain in the heart for humanity that unites us all; even those who have no sympathy for me, I thank him, because it helps improve myself.
What are you working on next?
Now I'm working on two different projects: an ebook for professional preparation in the competition by the head teacher and one of poetry whose theme is the search for the sweetness in the smallest things to make their lives fuller.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite author is Ernest Hemingway for his incisiveness that does not need the unnecessary language to combine emotion and authenticity to his writings.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Every morning I thank the Lord for allowing me to see the light. Until I lost tragically and quickly many of my loved ones, I assumed many things, but after I learned how fragile this great gift of life and I do not intend to waste even a moment.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
For over thirty years I have been a teacher and I was very busy, however, in the free time I have always loved to read, play tennis, table tennis, play guitar, paint, create new recipes that are based upon the culinary tradition Italian.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Many sites offer ebooks, I'm interested in both fiction books that psychology; I follow the reviews carefully and try to give a personal opinion.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I wrote was a sad story of a poor child who was abandoned by her mother in a poor orphanage. But the little girl could not consent to never see his mother, so escapes and after many adventures, she manages to make his fortune and to find the mother just before she died.
What is your writing process?
First, for a long time that I want to tell the story remains in my mind and I will tell it for many, many different versions; when I decided to start writing it, I am very rigorous in preparing all the necessary material: in-depth knowledge of the protagonist, the aides, the antagonists, places, professions, of whatever is necessary to history and to the sub plots; then let all the notes aside and let myself be carried away by the mood that I feel the only possible for my story, deciding whether third-person or first.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I read was David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. The novel David Copperfield tells the story of a troubled boy who, from a comfortable life, he finds himself poor and disinherited forced to make do with menial work. The story of David's life from childhood to his inner growth, denounces the situation of exploitation of children and adolescents who worked in the factories receiving very low fees. This story has matured in me feelings of justice and freedom that I've always tried to implement also in my profession.
How do you approach cover design?
I usually do to prepare, I prepare myself a draft cover almost the beginning of the first draft of the book because it serves as a stimulus to continue. Then at the end of the final, I ask to produce it, it is sometimes very different from the first.
