Interview with Wendy Glidden

What is your writing process?
Often I see or hear a chapter title and I type it in and just allow the words to flow out of my fingertips. When I have not heard or seen a topic to write on, I sometimes just sit down and begin typing what first comes to my head. It seems to me that I type like I think and talk.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
This is not the first story I ever read but it was one that left an impression on me. I was subscribed to Reader's Digest for my tenth birthday gift and I read this story about a principal that had run an experiment at his school. The gist of the story was this: He took the records of the worst students and rewrote their educational history and placed them in a class for achievers. The teacher believed she had the best students when in reality she did not. However, these same students who had been labeled as problematic and not worth much effort, became the students their folders claimed they were. I was blown away. The proof was in the pudding. All that a child truly needed to change their lives was positive encouragement and belief from their superiors.
How do you approach cover design?
I found an artist that I love and asked for her help. I share with her what my book is about and what I am going for and she and I work together.
What do you read for pleasure?
Today I read inspirational books when I am blessed to have down time! The last book I read was all about how to publish a book! Currently I am reading a book about Jesus.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I am an old fashioned kind of reader. I actually read printed books! I am looking for an older kindle that has no back light as I feel it is time I launched myself into the techno world!
Describe your desk
On my desk you will always find pictures of my children, a cup of coffee, and a bible! It's nothing fancy. I have no drawers in it. This is because I am a pack rat at heart. I don't care to be tempted by drawers to stay organized!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. I don't really know how this influenced my writing other than perhaps the teachers that encouraged me over the years.
When did you first start writing?
I know I was writing by age 10. I honestly don't know how much sooner than ten I may have begun.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story is that God called me to do what I had begged Him to let me do since childhood. Publish books to bring hope to the hopeless. From childhood to adulthood this is what I truly always wanted to do. Little did I know I would be writing about myself! God has an awesome sense of humor!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords made the process both affordable and understandable. I actually thanked them in my acknowledgements.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy of writing would be talking to my readers or reading an email from them.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are everything. They encourage me to continue. Without 'fans' your books collect dust.
What are you working on next?
Two books. The second volume to my life story and another title called 'In the Midst of Spiritual Warfare'. Both of them are over half way completed!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Oh my! Now that's a good question! I work full time at a family business so that takes up quite a bit of my time. Outside of that I'm hanging out with my children and my husband. We do a lot of fun things as a family. There is rarely a dull moment!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was in my Junior year of High School. I wrote a book about 3 best friends and how their lives played out over their summer break before their Senior Year started.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I share my books on my facebook page and in various groups. Next month I am going to work on creating audio versions of my books.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
In all honesty, God called me forth to share my story.
