Interview with Luc Iver de Vil

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Keeps me busy, keeps me out of trouble, keeps me out of jail.
What are you working on next?
I am working on Erotic book about a friend that visited me from the USA, and our adventures while taking a road trip through parts of the country.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans is an encouragement not to stop writing, but to strife to improve my penmanship.
What is your writing process?
I get an idea for a story, scribble down some notes on a piece of paper, sit in front of the computer and type a rough draft. Often my story changes from the original idea as I go along. Then I will review the draft, try and fix grammar and spelling, and even make changes to the story line.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, It was a little book called "Tales of Troy", about the 10 year war for the possession of the beautiful Helen, and the Wooden Horse thought up by Odysseus! This little book was already old when I laid my hands on it, as it was a prescribed book handed to my dad when he was at school! I was hooked on reading, and still have the little book, and my daughter loved reading it too!
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design I leave to my wife, my greatest fan and supporter. She is much better at it than I can hope to be!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Difficult question! Depends very much on my mood; do I want light reading, or do I want to "think" while I read? I enjoy cynical humor, adventure, books based on historical facts and I read lots of non-fiction on scientific discoveries and theories.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Desktop computer! I can have sandwiches and coffee on the desk while reading! I have learned that keyboards don't like coffee or tomato juice, mine needs replacing regularly when it gets "jammed"!
When did you first start writing?
When still very young and at primary school, not very successfully! At High school I started writing poetry, and essays. with some success,
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Am still very new on Smashwords, and am still struggling to get things 'right'! Success thus hasn't come my way yet.
Who are your favorite authors?
To many to list, and also depends on my mood at any specific time. South African authors I enjoy rereading are Herman Charles Bosman and CJ Langenhoven. I also read a lot of Graham Hancock and books by any author in the same gender.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The smell of coffee!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am involved in farming, which takes a lot of time. I also travel as much as is possible, visiting far off isolated places.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Vaguely, it was a boy's adventure story, ideas stolen from Mark Twain! It was never published though! (Mr Twain, please don't sue me for copyright, I did not make a sent!)
What do you read for pleasure?
Depending on my mood, and what is at hand!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
My book marketing has not been effective at all to date!
Describe your desk
It is an old wooden desk, six drawers of which two are broken. On top is my computer, a heap of dictionaries, note pads and pens strewn around, heaps of pieces of paper with notes scribbled, two overflowing ashtrays with empty cigarette packets, one dirty coffee mug, two mugs with cold coffee in it and a note stuck to the screen from my wife with instructions not to forget to fetch my daughter from the stables where she is teaching her horse Lady Grey to jump higher than one meter.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in many places within Southern Africa, including countries like Namibia and Botswana, My father was an adventurer too, A lot of my stories are based on traveling, and meeting interesting people.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Traveling through parts of this country, accompanied by a beautiful visitor from the USA. Still to be completed!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The easiest way to get my stories out there!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
By browsing E-publishing websites.
