Interview with William Chasterson

Published 2014-07-26.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always seen traditional art as a way to express myself. Recently I've become aware of the ability to use words to paint interesting pictures and influence emotions.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has created a simple step by step process in order to connect with readers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Accurately communicating my feelings and being understood by others.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Reviews make all the time spent writing worthwhile.
What are you working on next?
I'm writing a "Don Quijote" style novel about a super hero named Metaphysical Man. His only weakness is reality.
Who are your favorite authors?
George Orwell, Franz Kafka, Fyodor Dostoyevski. Not necessarily in that order.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevski. After reading this book I recognized the ability of an author to manipulate emotions. I was being tortured along with the main character, yet I couldn't stop coming back for more.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Brothers Karamozov : This book accurately divides aspects of the human psyche and then portrays them in the form of various characters in the story. Sounds bookish but very entertaining.

Crime and Punishment : It's an agonizing and hard fought struggle for redemption. What's not to love?

1984 : This book made me aware of a lot of aspects of society that I never noticed before.

Metamorphosis : Unexpectedly brought me to tears.

The Trial : Like most of what Kafka writes, this book gave me a simultaneous feeling of terror and tranquility.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
A small town in the Midwest of the United States. Being brought up in a small town I'm able to relate to the main character of my story who had humble beginnings but was unpreparedly thrust into the world.
What do you read for pleasure?
History books.
