Interview with William Kenney

What's the story behind your latest book?
With Maidenjade, I wanted to create a shared world where two or more writers could contribute short stories that all take place in the same dark city. In the end, the creation of this world fell to myself and Stefain. Now that we are published, I am glad that only the two of us took part in the creation of this world. We now have a definite direction that we are taking this tale. The city is a den of thieves and assassins, a place that no right-minded soul would want to visit.

Book Description: The jade was cursed, that's what the people believed and it quickly grew out of favor. The city of Maidenjade relied on the stone, it was the entire reason for its existence. As those with coin left the city, only the most dangerous scavengers remained; thieves, assassins and those with nowhere else to go. The stories within this volume tell the tales of those unfortunate souls that still call Maidenjade their home, each trying to scrape out an existence in this filthy and ill-fated place. Some steal to survive, others kill.

And then there is the city beneath the city, referred to as the Deepdark or the Shivers. This subterranean maze is home to dark magic and the horrific creatures that serve it, with passages that seemingly shift overnight. Those who are sent on jobs below are paid a premium, though most would flat-out refuse.

William Kenney and Stefain bring you stories filled with colorful characters and dramatic events. Do you dare walk the streets of Maidenjade? If so, wear the iron, my friend. It may turn away those spectral creatures that would drag you beneath the dirt.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
By joining Smashwords I have extended my reach and made my work available to many more readers across the world. Smashwords has taken a lot of the headache away from distributing my work to many ebook sellers online.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I just love creation. Characters, settings, events. This has been a joy for me since childhood. To be able to create stories that give the reader an emotional journey is very fulfilling.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love connecting with readers of my work. When my stories make a difference in someone's life, there is no better feeling. It makes it feel like I am doing something worthwhile. Many times it's the fans that keep my going. When someone asks about a future book, it is inspiring.
What are you working on next?
I have several books in the pipeline right now. A fourth book for the In the Shadow of the Black Sun series, a cyberpunk/urban fantasy novel and a story involving Vikings. There are more ideas bubbling, notes being written. It's a constant process and never stops.
Who are your favorite authors?
I fell in love with the work of Tolkien when I was around 10 years old. This is what gave me my love of fantasy stories and inspired me to create my own. Other authors that I enjoy are William Gibson, Terry Brooks, Michael Moorcock, Fritz Lieber, Stephen R. Donaldson and many more.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm always busy. When not spending time with my wife and children, I can be found drawing/painting or playing music/recording songs. I can't seem to stop myself from creating new things, it's an obsession.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I've made many author friends online and in-person. I usually try to check their stuff out first when I see it promoted on their social media pages.
What is your writing process?
Once an idea pops into my brain, I usually jot down notes in a spiral notebook. I try to come up with a loose outline of how the story will unfold. Once I have that figured out, I start writing it out freehand. Then once a week I will type that stuff into the computer. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the first story, but I know the impact that The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings had on me as a young boy. After finishing the story, I wanted to be able to create that same feeling in others. With my In the Shadow of the Black Sun series that is what I have attempted to do. I want readers to experience that feeling of magic and wonder that captured me when I was around 11 years old.
