Interview with Lisa Hughes

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Writing is an outlet and professional hobby. I can follow the discipline of writing well, enjoy and share my work without breaking my budget.
What's the story behind your latest book?
In or around 1990, my father moved in with us. That’s when I learned to be a caregiver. He had Alzheimer’s disease and after a couple of years and a couple of moves died from its complications. Being responsible for another person’s life was new to me. Lots of information and responsibility with very little expertise or skill. I often “relied on the kindness of strangers,” doctors, nurses, social workers, whom I counted as blessings in a most chaotic world.

Both parents went through so much physically, mentally, and spiritually and yet could always smile or laugh at something, even when faced with pain, discouragement, aging, illness, and finally death. What courage and cheer I have, I learned from their example.

In my best moments, Mom guides me with her wisdom. Her smile and courage sustain me. She is my love. Dad is still a presence in my life. I can still talk with and laugh with him, channeling his practical wisdom and his humor.

After Dad’s Alzheimer’s dementia diagnosis, I became his caregiver. This book comes from diary entries and others’ experiences of providing care for loved ones. Some is fiction, most is true. Keep an open heart as you journey with Ernest and Eartha Rose through the tough times--confusion, resistance, and pain--of caregiving, along with the good times, moments of love, joy, and peace.
