Interview with Melissa Lyle

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the first story I ever read, but I do remember loving 'The Chronicles of Narnia' as a child. Those books have helped to inspire me throughout the years and fueled my deep love and passion for fantasy and writing fantasy.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Wow! It's been a long time ago. No, I don't, to be honest. I used to write a lot of little drabbles and stories when I was a kid. Most of it was my original work, but some of it would probably be considered 'fanfiction' now. As for what the very first one was, I don't remember.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Letting my mind run free and immersing myself in my own worlds that I've created. It's an escape from the normal everyday, like reading. My mind fills up with all of these fantastical worlds and characters, and I've got to get it out somehow.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I don't like the idea of going through a traditional publisher and the heartache and frustration it brings. I like being in control of the process, working on my own time, being the publisher, and being my own boss. I'm tired of traditional publishers choosing what they feel is 'good reading'. It really isn't fair that some get chosen and others don't (and some of the ones who weren't chosen end up becoming best-sellers when they become an indie author). All writers have stories to tell, and it saddens me that traditional publishers only choose based on their opinion.
What are you working on next?
More short stories. And I'm also working on the first book in a superhero series I'm going to be publishing soon. Lots of good stuff to look forward to there, I can already say. I can't wait to share it with everyone.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing? What sorcery do you speak of? *laughs* I enjoy reading, drawing, writing fanfiction, playing video games, watching cartoons, spending time with my family and friends, playing with my cats, listening to music, collecting, and being a fangirl.
What do you read for pleasure?
Pretty much anything that's good, written well, and fits my taste: books, short stories, classics, fanfiction, comic books, children's books, etc. I'll read anything that isn't romance or non-fiction.
Who are your favorite authors?
C.S. Lewis, Rick Riordan, C.S. Forester, Charles Dickens, Mary Downing Hahn, Dan Poblocki, John White, L. Frank Baum, Lemony Snicket, Donita K. Paul, Bill Myers, H.G. Wells, Madeleine L'Engle, and Roald Dahl.
