Interview with Cara J. Swanson

Who are your favorite authors?
As a child, I absolutely loved Laura Ingalls Wilder and C.S. Lewis. Later I added Mercedes Lackey to my list of favorites; as an adult, I put Stephen King as #1, followed closely by Garth Nix and Orson Scott Card.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Who wants to lay in bed all day? There's too much to do!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work full-time outside of the home, and fit writing in as much as I can.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I just browse new releases, talk to family and friends to get recommendations, probably what most people do.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I remember the first story I ever published - which might be the first complete story I ever wrote. It was 6th grade, and my best friend Nicole did the illustrations. It was put into a spiral-bound notebook, which was pretty much the extent of "self-publishing" back then!
What is your writing process?
I do not have a "process." I write, and I edit, and I edit, and I write, and most of my ideas seem to come while I am in the shower or laying in bed, and I try to remember them so I can write/edit all over again.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No. I remember trying to read a book of comic strips my dad had brought back from New Zealand called Footrot Flats.
How do you approach cover design?
I prefer to do my own covers, when possible. I usually have the idea for the cover pretty early on in the book; but I play around with it and try different things until I find what I really like.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. The Gunslinger series by Stephen King
2. The Ender series by Orson Scott Card
3. The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix
4. The Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling
5. The Pern series by Mercedes Lackey

As to why....who knows why we like what we like? We just do.
What do you read for pleasure?
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book (The Long Journey - to be released December 2013) began as a short story called "All in a Day's Work," featuring a Seeker (Bounty-Hunter) named Khadija and her Partner, the wolf Ula. I wrote that story about ten years ago. I recently looked back at it, and realized that it was just the seed for a larger project, which is exactly what happened.
