Interview with Josie Logan

Published 2018-04-15.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Queens New York. Not quite sure if it directly influenced my writing but going to college in New York and just living life I think affected my life the most. I've lived so many places that my life experiences influence my writing more than where I live.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing four started to like writingIn sixth grade English class. I really liked learning about poetry and writing poetry so that was my first introduction to writing. When I graduated from high schoolAnd work that whatever crappy job I was at at the time, I started doing a lot of poetry writing and that led me down the road to seeking a degree in journalism.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I do the majority of my reading on my iPad. It may be the reason why I have such a hard time reading real books anymore.
Something about that backlight when you get older.
Who are your favorite authors?
James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Maya Angelou. I'm sure I'm missing someone.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I design T-shirts, I am trying to start a podcast, and trying to restart my blog so as you can see I stay busy creatively.
What is your writing process?
I start on paper a lot of times. I find that my hands don't move as fast as my brain so the one good thing about modern technology is I get to use my microphone to get my thoughts out and do a brain dump and then I can go back and edit.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Breakfast. Breakfast makes me want to get out of bed each morning. Sometimes it's the simple things. Outside of breakfast I need to feel as if I am contributing something positive to the world.
