Interview with Tinashe Yadley Nyangombe

Published 2014-10-16.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the dusty streets of Marondera, a small town which is about 80 kilometres from the big city of Harare, Zimbabwe. My dad being an academic, exposed me to a lot of books...I was a loner, never really liked spending what I felt was `useless` time hanging out with the other boys in the street.I then would spend most of my time reading a lot of newspapers (how I loved the Christian article pages). The other time I had a very wierd dream which I believed was a very spiritual one.By the end of the following day, I had written about 7 pages describing the dream. That was my first book ever (don't remember where I put it after that).
What's the story behind your latest book?
In I Have Control, God gave me a special message to all leaders worldwide.I present a fundamental encouragement in the form of an allegory. In the story, I present a uniquely different angle to what most people believe in.The world teaches us that having the right knowledge only, will solve all your problems and will open up new opportunities for you.But the moral of the book presents this new perspective that its not what you know but WHO you know that matters.if you know God then you are assured of victory.Leaders who know God and honor His principles are the ones who change the world.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
To be honest, I had knocked a million doors and always received rejections. It was tough, tougher than the word tough. The idea of an aviation themed Christian book is a new idea particularly in my hometown.Publishers had a hard time trying to accept me.Then after all the heartaches because of the rejections, one day I listened to a sermon by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy International. He was talking about the power of creativity and I believed on that word and started acting upon it.Pastor Chris encouraged me to discover the greatness in me by learning to discover that all that I ever need is in me.That helped me to explore the world of self publishing and although I am not excatly where I want to be, I am excited about being an Indie author
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of my 'free time' doing any one of these activities: singing with my brothers/ researching on aviation matters/ ministering to people's spiritual needs through speaking the Word of God or flying. I also fly a lot on Microsoft Flight Simulator.I am a crazy aviation enthusiast and logging flights on Microsoft Flight Simulator has become a daily routine for me.I have so far logged over 20 000 flight hours since a few years ago.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Most of the great books I've ever come across are the ones that I was given by friends.I rarely go on the internet to search for ebooks. In my laptop I have about 1200 ebooks that I was given by my friends.
What's next after this?
From today till the next 27 days, I will be concentrating on marketing I Have Control.Soon after that I will be launching an online aviation school. The aim of that aviation school is basically to provide high quality yet low cost short courses for aviation enthusiasts. This will be a great relief especially for those who want to be involved in aviation but shy away because of the huge costs involved.Because of these engagements, I have put all my travel schedules on hold till the next three months.
What is your writing process?
Its pretty wierd.I usually get my 'writing inspiration' late in the nights whe most people are asleep.I have one notebook where I jot down all my drafts for my writings.Once I write just one idea as a sentence in that notebook, by the end of the week it would have fully developed as a mature story.Within two weeks, It will be a done deal - thats another book on my bookshelf!
How do you approach cover design?
My young brother, Denzel is a professional designer and he does all of my cover designs.I usually don't like pushing him, making 'orders' when he is designing my work.I approach cover designing as a very delicate matter and I think its wise to leave those who are called in the trade to express themselves the best way they can.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
First and foremost - The Bible beats any other bestseller book I have ever come across, or ever will.I am known to always say "The Bible is more relevant than even tomorrow's newspaper. Then of course, there are other books I love as well. The story of Douglas Badder moved me (I do not remember the author's name), The Pilot Factor by Jean Dennis Marcellin is another great piece. The Pilot Factor appeals very much to my intellectual faculty. Its a well written and highly informative book. Then yah, these ones, all the book by Captain Eric Auxier.Wow, especailly The last bush pilots...quite captivating storyline.
What do you read for pleasure?
To be honest, I never actually read for pleasure.I read to gain insights or specialized knowledge. To think I have a book that I have read for pleasure?Umm I would be lying to you.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use a Samsung Tablet 7.1 at the moment and it works pretty fine for me.The advantage is I can install all the other e-reading apps you can think of.On my tablet, I have also installed The Kindle Reading app.I think I will stick with Samsung for a long time to come.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Im still a newbie in book marketing, still trying to get a hang of it.But so far, blogging and email newsletters have proven to be great blessings to me.
