Interview with Yaseen Essack

What motivated you to become an author?
Well, as a writer I could write a book to answer that question, however, I will give you the short answer.
I write because the power of words is an amazingly unappreciated weapon as I have mentioned in my bio.
Weapons that can cause destruction or stand up as one voice against tyranny and oppression.
I write to inspire, to motivate, to bring hope where none exists.
I write to amplify the voice of those who have been silenced by fear.
I write to test the limits of our imagination and free the minds of the masses that have been imprisoned by greedy, hateful men.
Okay, I know I got a bit carried away there but that is exactly my point. I am an Author as it allows me the freedom to use merely my mind and words to spread an idea that will echo throughout mankind and become engraved in history.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
If I am being honest. I haven't made use of all that Smashwords has to offer and I plan on changing that. I think Smashwords provides an excellent platform for writers to get their work out there without the need for massive amounts of capital. In this regard, I feel Smashword will contribute significantly to future successes.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
That is simple.
Hope. Hope in people. A new hope each day that we as humanity can do better than the last.
Hope that beneath all the greed, hate, pride and power, there are still those few good people fighting the good fight.
Hope that we as humans are inherently good and evil individuals have poisoned the masses.
Hope that we can do better, and we must do better, and we will do better. (Inspirational words from the west wing haha.)
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Well, I think I have answered this previously, however my greatest joy would have to be the fact that something as simple as combining the correct words in the correct sequence can create ideas, revolt against dictators, alter perceptions, and free the minds. Furthermore, I love to see the way a persons face fills with expressions of joy, sadness, and laughter all at once. This is what we as authors can do.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am studying a double major in Genetics and Biochemistry. I spend time with my family and my dogs as well. My dogs are my pride and joy. I spend quality time walking, feeding, and playing with them. Additionally, I adore my movies and series. Besides reading a mind-blowing novel, watching a marvelous movie is next on my list.
What are you working on next?
My immediate focus is writing blog articles for my dog blog located at Thereafter, I will publish a series of eBooks relating to the website and compiling the best articles in a series of clear guides pertaining to choosing, training, grooming, and loving your dogs.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I am going to answer this question by quoting the famous novelist, author, and film maker, Neil Gaiman,
"“Picking five favorite books is like picking the five body parts you’d most like not to lose.”
Enough said.
What do your fans mean to you?
Now... I could tell you what you want to hear, "My fans mean everything to me, they are the reason I wake up in the morning, they are the reason I write", however this is a hyperbole and only partly true. I write not what will make my readers happy, anybody can do that. I want to make my fans and readers think, consider, ponder, become uncomfortable and begin to ask the correct questions, thus leading to them to find the truth. I write truth and in some instances take my readers to the realm of fantasy to escape the truth of reality. It is obvious though that I value my fans and readers for they are a big part(not the only reason but a significant reason) of why I write. This question does remind me of a famous quote from Ohio Congressman and Speaker of the House in 2015. John Boehner said, "A leader without followers is simply a man taking a walk." Likewise, I say that "an author without readers is just poor." No I am just kidding. We as authors write for the readers and fans not to please them, but FOR them in whatever form that may be.
