Interview with Yasmine Jameson

Published 2014-04-15.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are Janet Evanovich, Judy Bloom, Nora Roberts, Ann Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz, Iris Johansen and some others I can not think of and of course myself.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
That is a good question. A desire to not sit around and let life pass me by.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work a job and I read a lot for book reviews.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Book reviews, conversations with other authors, magazine articles and I judge a contest for writers.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No it was in highschool so I don't.
What is your writing process?
My writing process is- not sure that is a good question. I generally start with an idea, pass it to my family member and they tell me its not a story. Then I start writing on it. If it works I keep it going. If not I put it away. But if the story works, then I write when I feel a story idea coming on or I just started with a new schedule. Which actually isn't so new but I don't follow. I am trying to finish my book so I try and look it at every day even if I don't write. I tend to write a lot at like 1 am in the morning. An idea pops up in my head and so I type it into my cell phone and save it as a text message. Then I get up the next day and add it to my YW5. The story generally writes itself. And its funny because even if I stay away for say a month or two when I come back it still follows chronologically and all of that. My current problem is my middle has to be fleshed out. After I am done, I have someone read it, either a family member or a friend who edited the first novel and gave me some pointers (they were killers) on a story I submitted for a website that made it so much better (hated him) and then take their words into consideration for editing. Then I go back and edit and re-write if need be. And then have them re-read. Then I shop around and publish.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No not really.
How do you approach cover design?
I like simple, earthy, sexy, real covers. Something that puts you to a mind of your life or maybe that of the persons involved in the story.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read mystery, some romance (but have grown out of it), self help, cook books, true crime, non fiction and biography, memoirs and comedic novels and manuals for education.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like my Nook and my Kindle. But I read my Kindle more often than the Nook. I also have calibre loaded to read on the computer as well. That is a really good way to read as well.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I haven't sold a lot but I have sold most by word of mouth. So I would have to say that the word of mouth works so far.
Describe your desk
I don't have a desk per say. I write when I sit down somewhere and have space. I have my laptop opened up and normally I have the television on but muted. I also have a telephone near by to answer the telephone, a dictionary, something to drink like coffee or strawberry milk or tea or juice and also another book or magazine for breaks. I also have an external drive, a thumb drive and a disc drive, and cd drive. All of which I use at some point. If I had a desk though I would also have to have a bigger screen to see my typing on, a printer/fax/scanner, that also prints color, a bigger external drive and a lot of thumb drives.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New Jersey. I don't really know if it influenced me but I do use the places that I have been to and visited throughout my life in the writing of my story. It hasn't been published yet, but hopefully the new mystery will be out next year.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing to make some money in 2003.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is a murder mystery where the victim is a college student who got murdered. She is a domestic violence survivor who is working undercover with another domestic violence survivor. And the sleuth is a college student named Charlie who works with her lawyer father Marc. The two of them along with her side kick Miela (she has just given birth) solve this mystery.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I couldn't sell my novel to regular publishers. I wrote a poetry novel first and it isn't generally accepted to publishing houses. So I looked around to self publish and actually contacted a few. But I decided on Smashwords because I got a free ISBN, a web page, I could pick how much I sold for and I also knew some authors who use this as a platform for selling.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has sold five of my books so far, and has also helped me locate other authors to read from and help with their tours.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Finishing up a story and liking what I wrote.
What do your fans mean to you?
The fans mean they read my book, they like it, they paid for it and they want me to write more. I don't have a lot right now but I have a few on my two blogs which are www.teribelle.wordpress.com and www.yasminejameson.wordpress.com as well. Some have checked out the book hopefully and downloaded a sample.
What are you working on next?
The Voyeur Lawyer should be finished soon. And I am looking for another book to send to the publisher for review to be picked up by the publisher. Haven't found it yet but I will to send.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Tame My Wild Heart Sylvie Sommerfield (not sure of the author) but I love this story line. Clay finds a young lady and they fall in love.

Sweet Savage Summer Talon (sorry forget the heroines names) He is a white man raised as an indian and he falls in love with a young white woman of genteel society. And its there story.

Sweet Silken Savage A Panther Stalks/Adam and Sorrel. She is a kidnap victim from a wagon trail by his tribe. And he picks her out as his slave. And then they get married after her living there. She gets picked up by white men to take them home and he goes to his family and picks her up. She finds out that he has a family in Mexico or somewhere and has a ranch and is called Adam. She has his baby and his family notes that she is very obedient and finally figures out that they are already married. And he is there to take her home along with his son.

The Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich. If you don't know why here is why- first its set in NJ so I recognize the places. Second Stephanies character is a hoot. Third you have the hooker turned secretary for the office. She is entertaining. You got Joe the cop and ex boyfriend. Now current lover. But on the other hand you have Ranger, bounty hunter, muscle bound, big truck driver, current boyfriend and saves her ass. What's not to like?

If I think of the fifth one or a new one I will update you.
What do I wish for my future as a writer?
I hope to just write.
