Interview with Yelyzaveta Tretiakova

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It wasn't something I read, but rather the fairy tales my parents told me. I enjoyed them a lot and loved it when my mom or dad read story books for me. But one day, they told me I had to start reading myself, so I did, though unwantingly.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I was about 7 or 8 years old, maybe a year older. I was fascinated by butterflies, and each summer I'd take out my butterfly net and go "hunting". After catching a butterfly and carefully examining it I would let it go, of course. I made notes about them, and started writing a book about different species, conditions for growing them and reproduction. I almost finished the book, actually!
What do you read for pleasure?
Usually young adult fiction or fantasy. Sometimes sci-fi.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I am a bookworm and I read ALL kinds of books, starting with sci-fi and ending with a health care dictionary. My favorites are probably not single books, but rather series too. And they are the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, A Song of Ice and Fire series by G.R.R. Martin, the Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk, and Rick Riordan's Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse mythogy-based series.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I used to own an e-book-reading tablet, and before that I read e-books on my laptop, but now I prefer my smartphone.
Describe your desk
It's not always tidy, but when it does get cleaned up, it looks kind of deserted. I've got books, notebooks, pens, pencils, felt pens, highlighters and even small notes with momentary ideas scattered all around.
Who are your favorite authors?
J.K. Rowling, obviously, since I'm a big fan of hers. Rick Riordan. Some classic authors, like Leo Tolstoy or Fyodor Dostoyevsky. And also some modern ones, like G.R.R. Martin; John Green's good too.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I feel that I am becoming one of those people, whose stories I've been reading my whole life. And now, I am also creating one of these stories.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Most of my books sprang up from my mind like random ideas that I have further developed. My latest book originated the same way. It discusses the life-long story of pure love, with a plot twist in the very end.
What are you working on next?
I've got a whole bunch of ideas for future books in my mind and on paper. I've also got a long series of fantasy-young adult books that I'm planning right now. I think readers are going to love them.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My alarm clock. It never stops ringing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I guess the fact that I am pretty young? I realized that it would be better to start growing my audience as soon as possible, but I couldn't afford spending a lot of money on traditional publishing. I did my research and found out about self-publishing. That's when it hit me: I could be an indie author!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love watching movies and tv shows, and because I am also a screenwriter, I prefer analyzing films from different sides to understand the way they are made.
What is your writing process?
Planning, drinking tea and eating chocolate, outlining a bit, drinking and eating again, finally sitting down and just writing on. Of course, it all starts with a single idea!
