Interview with Zane Dowling

Describe your desk
My desk is small because I am not a rich man except in spirit and imagination. It is always cluttered with notes holding ideas for projects, books I am working on, bills to pay, files to be put away. The 'fun' never ends.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Rural Pennsylvania was my childhood home. I was adventurous as a child, always wanting to explore and find new areas, new things. Because of this my interests are often not what normal people would find interesting. My writing is often influenced by my past experience, how could it not be, but it likely my exploring the unknown that lets my imagination take me past my personal experience into the new territories of my mind.
When did you first start writing?
I guess it wasn't until after I graduated High School that I first explored the possibility of expressing myself through writing. After getting a taste of it in my college writing classes, is when it first started developing into what would eventually become a passion. I now realize it is my curiosity coupled with my satisfaction in puzzle solving that drives me to express the written word in just the right way to make it like a finished puzzle. I find it very satisfying to see how it has come together in the end.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Well I have yet to put it on smashwords, though it is available on, but it is one of those ideas that came to me in a dream. The dream has faded now so, it would take a miracle to bring it back to my mind, and I have lost track of the original note I wrote about it, but it developed into a story about Cain from the bible. There is a school of thought that says he is the wondering Jew of legend. My book 'Brother's Keeper' follows a part of his life where he returns to God and becomes a champion of good saving the lives of the innocent. He fights demons, evil men, and even his own fears as he strives to do everything in his power to be his "Brother's Keeper".
Who are your favorite authors?
I guess, being a christian, my favorite author is the author and finisher of my faith - God in all his Father, Son, and Holy Spirit splendor. After that my favorite earthly author is Patrick Rothfuss and then Tolkien, of course.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
It is not so much an inspiration as something that happens. I don't want to spend my life in bed, so I get up and do other things that I do want to do.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. Of course, it sucked.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember a lot of the stories I read as a kid, but the thing I remember most is that I rarely had the patients to read them to the end. I have never been much of a reader, or maybe the author was never really able to impact me sufficiently.
What is your writing process?
Inspiration, put it to words, change those words until they sound pretty good, edit, edit, edit, edit, edit, edit, edit, edit, have something that some people will hopefully enjoy.
What do you read for pleasure?
Technical type books and articles on archaeology, history, or scientific theory.
