Interview with Zanna Reese
Published 2016-12-28.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was about Max, a mouse that traveled the world on a rocket scooter, who fought the evil cat crimelords. I tried to do it as a comic, but visuals weren't my thing.
What is your writing process?
I just get it there. I just start writing to tell the story first. Then I go back and take as long as necessary to edit.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of erotica, smut, and classical literature.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
When I'm at home, I love to read on my iPad because the screen and the actual page flipping animation. When I'm on the go, I use my phone.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Lots of Twitter and blog posts. I usually post blurbs from what I'm currently working on to entice readers before they're published.
Describe your desk
It's junky....Really junky. But it's a controlled chaos.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Mississippi, and I realized as I got older the religious aspect of life there impacted my writing more. I usually have some religious or spiritual undertones in my work, whether it's approaching some form of taboo or with a character that embodies some form of rebellion to religious and/or societal norms.
When did you first start writing?
I have always been writing since I could remember. Ever since I could write a coherent sentence, I've been writing!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I realized that my style and the subjects and how I approached them was not accepted to the degree I wanted it to be in "mainstream" published. This is doubly sure on my direct, yet philosophical approach to sexuality. Many publishers won't carry my content because it is "taboo" or too graphic for their normal audience. I was encouraged by one of my professors to just build my own brand since I was having issues getting publishing deals through normal means. It's harder, especially taking marketing and promoting upon one's self, but it's rewarding.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given me the best self-publishing platform. I've tried several over the past few years, but Smashwords is the one I'm sticking with. It's far more user friendly and flexible in so many ways, from marketing platforms to allowing readers to set their own prices for smaller works in preparation for larger projects.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
By far, it's sharing the story. I love the process of writing and perfecting each manuscript, but the biggest smile comes from sharing with your audience.
