Interview with Zara Zavaroni

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do, it was in primary school, maybe my 4th or 5th year so I would have been 8 or 9. It was a tale of smugglers off the south coast of England and I'd named all the characters after my friends. Rather disturbingly, everyone would be killed off by the end!
What is your writing process?
I like to make copious notes first and foremost. I use Evernote across various platforms so that I can map a story out before writing. I don't trust myself to freestyle my stories as I usually end up flying off on tangents and having to rein myself in!

Once I am happy with my notes, I get to writing. On the odd occasion, if I find the sexy stuff isn't 'coming' naturally to me, I write everything but the sex scene(s). Then, when I am feeling in the mood, I can 'insert' the hot stuff!
What do you read for pleasure?
I tend to favour crime novels, particularly the work of Mark Billingham and Ian Rankin. I also enjoy the Song of Ice & Fire series by George R R Martin and the novels of Stephen King.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I avoided e-readers for many years, preferring instead the feel of an actual book in my hands. In 2012 I made the leap and bought myself a Kindle Paperwhite. I love it.
Describe your desk
My desk is my lap! I write on my laptop, but if I did have a desk space set aside for writing, it would be much like my desk at work - sparse and tidy.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I don't think my writing is good enough to be published professionally, and I certainly don't think it is worth the price of a hardback/paperback. By self-publishing e-books I can set a more appropriate (lower) price.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing a story come alive and the satisfaction that comes with achieving something.
What do your fans mean to you?
When I first published this interview, my answer was this: "I don't believe I have any fans yet! If I did obtain a loyal following I would certainly appreciate their enjoyment of my stories."

Three months down the line and I can see from my sales on Smashwords and elsewhere that there are readers who really do love my work and purchase everything I have to offer. To these good people, I say thank you. I appreciate the validation the money you spend on my work gives me. I hope to keep you amused and aroused for many years to come!
Who are your favorite authors?
The crime writers Mark Billingham & Ian Rankin. I also love George R R Martin and Stephen King. I have a love/hate relationship with Dean Koontz, he has written some of my favourite and all-time most hated novels
What are you working on next?
I always have several novels and short stories on the go. I could never predict which one I would finish next! Sometimes I get the hankering to write some monster erotica, get a good few thousand words written done, then the next day find I can't go back to it. So I turn to another story. When I get stuck on that, I maybe go back to the first. Or start yet another!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
If I find a bargain and the synopsis grabs me I will certainly give an ebook a try if it is by an author I am unfamiliar with.
How do you approach cover design?
I have two smashing friends, Quentin Scott and Ashley Jay Allen, who design all my covers. They take turns and can be quite competitive, they want 'their' stories to be the ones that sell the most copies!

Just take a look at my covers, they are superb. I highly recommend emailing them if you are an author looking for a cover designer with a wicked imagination. Their email addresses are: &
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have found Twitter to be very useful as a marketing tool as it has allowed me to reach a much wider audience than I might otherwise have. My blog ( is well-read too and I'm sure readers have found my work through my posts.

I was recently interviewed by a fellow author, Celia Dunroy, for her website. You can find this here:
