Interview with Anita Morris

What are you working on next?
I have already written a sequel to Red Hill. it's entitled Red Hill Razed. I'm in the process of editing it now.
When did you start writing your first work of fiction.
I began my first work of fiction, Red Hill, after I retired in January of 2014.
Who are your favorite authors?
That's a difficult question; I love to read all types of books. I enjoy Ken Follett, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and, of course, Harper Lee, a fellow Alabamian.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Of course, I am a zealous reader, but I certainly enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, playing the piano, and singing.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am the ultimate "Pollyanna", which tends to grind on some people's nerves, but I am thankful for each day I have. My inspiration springs from my desire to leave a sweet taste in the mouths of those I know and love.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I read reviews and listen to other readers when they discuss books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote a story in the sixth grade about bullying.
What is your writing process?
Basically, I think about the storyline and then expand on it in my head until the next morning when I actually record my thoughts.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Before I started to the first grade, I read my older brother's genetic textbook from college. That fueled my thirst for knowledge.
How do you approach cover design?
i wanted a realistic image that matched with what was in my head.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Ken Follett's trilogy counts for three, I suppose. The Boxcar Children was a childhood favorite. Wally Lamb's book, I Know This Much is True brought me to tears. Malcolm Gladwell's Tipping Point affected my life tremendously. And, of course, The Bible will always remain my favorite.
What do you read for pleasure?
Reading IS my pleasure.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I adore my I-Pad.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm a novice, but it appears word of mouth is quite reliable.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a wonderful little town called Brownville. It taught me to appreciate the complexities of average, hard-working people.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My grandparents, parents, and other close family members were all great storytellers. I enjoyed listening to them as we shelled peas, cut off corn, and enjoyed the ever present breeze on the front porches. I launched from their ideas the possibility of Red Hill.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My friend, David Johnson, encouraged me to use this method. He is enjoying great success with his Tucker series.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
it took out the fear of rejection.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
i feel like it's a tribute to my family, my friends, and to the beautiful, rich history of the South.
What do your fans mean to you?
I hope that each fan can relate to the book and be encouraged to be his/her family's memories keeper.
