Interview with Beverly Montgomery

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always had a vivid imagination. As a child I often had the key role in plays and fell in love with the characters I played. Once I had a role as someone's conscience and the setting was a Baptist Church. I was about ten years old and I hid under the pews and said, "Money is the root of all evil." Everyone was turning around trying to determine where the voice was coming from and I so enjoyed fooling them. I would say this was the beginning of me desiring to bring characters to life.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given me a wonderful opportunity to have my work read by a broad spectrum of people.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy is development of the characters and completion of the book.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me because without them, I would not have been motivated to continue to write books.
What are you working on next?
I am considering having a spin-off for A Burning Secret because there are a number of characters that lend themselves to another book. I haven't decided but I have written about nine books so I will revisit them to determine next steps.
Who are your favorite authors?
I don't have a favorite author because it narrows your view so I generally look for a title based upon what I am interested in reading. I have a library of books in my home so I read everything including Christian authors, self help, biographical and so on.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life inspires me! Each day God gives me is a blessing and I intend to make good use of it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have a very active mind so I help people launch new businesses or improve existing ones, I have created a bobble head doll, Baby Bobble Fresh, that was designed to help parents and others remember not to leave their infants in cars. I held a contest to get the design I wanted and the actual prototype was created in China. It is available for sale on I am constantly coming up with new ideas to improve my life and others and it is very rewarding.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I generally have a particular genre in mind and then I view on kindle. I also have books that I have authored on kindle.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, the first book I every wrote was a children's book entitled, Mommy, Where Is Heaven?
What is your writing process?
I usually have a title in mind first and I write around it. This is different from most authors but that's the way I write.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Good Question and difficult to answer. The first book that I read that really had an impact was "Dick and Jane." This of course is a first grader book but for me it signified that I could read and that was a big deal for me. Since that time, I would say that in 1968, I was in my senior year of school and one of the books we were assigned to read was the book, 1984. It seemed so farfetched at the time but looking at where we are today it was very timely and realistic.
How do you approach cover design?
Generally, I sketch a design and I have someone create it. However, I do have a background in Graphic Design and I was the Manager of the Graphic Design Department at a large company in San Francisco.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Bible, Jennifer Hudson, I Got This, God Still Don't Like Ugly, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and one of my books, Imperfect People Managing In An Imperfect Word. These books all have thought provoking themes.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy poetry and sometimes I just like reading a variety of magazines.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
word of mouth and the web.
Describe your desk
My desk has a variety of legal and management books, computer software disks and you name it. It is a messy desk but I am one of those crazy people who can work in chaos because that's true life.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Mobile, Alabama in the 1950s. I lived the history of segregation. I am better and stronger for all my experiences and it was the catalyst for my success. I have a MBA, degree in Legal Studies, Asbestos Certifications and other designations so it made me want to prove that the only limitations are those you place on yourself or those that you allow others to place on you!
When did you first start writing?
In my early forties, I began writing children books.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have always wanted to write a romantic novel so I decided that now is the time.
Who is your Inspiration?
My mother was my biggest inspiration because she believed that I could do anything and she was very proud of me. Whenever, she would see someone in the White House or anywhere that she perceive to be a high position, she would always say that she would tell people, Beverly would be great for that job! She inspired me to be the best that I can be.
How Many Books Have You Written and What Are The Titles?
I have written over nine books including, On the shoulders of Greatness, Imperfect People Managing In An Imperfect World, In the Light of Day, Pekepsy, Mommy, Where Is Heaven?, Mommy, Why Don't I Look Good In The Mirror? Exploration, Empowerment, Advancement, Rewind the Tape and Rewrite the Script for your Future, Mama Never Told Me and In Deep Thought.
Do You have a Pen Name?
Yes, some of my earlier books were written under "Honey Chocolate-Brown."
