Interview with Ada Kate Uchegbu

What Motivated You To Write A Book On The Biafran war?
My dad was a Biafran soldier during the war. He was barely twenty years old. And when I was born, he was regaled me with stories about the war. I grew up,reading a lot of stories about the Biafran war and I started having inspirations. I thought to myself, "What if I could write a fantasy about this war?". "What if the gods actually came down in human form to fight in this war?". I have always enjoyed fantasy movies and books.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The thought of serving humanity keeps me going everyday. I wanted to serve humanity, that was why I became a politician and a writer.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love swimming and cooking. I also play the table-tennis. And on most weekends, I am practicing my piano lessons.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I get all the ebooks I read on smashwords. And also from recommendations from my friends and colleagues.
When Did You Write Your First Story?
My first story was written when I was thirteen. But I didn't publish it because I was shy.
Why did you dedicate Your new book "The Slaughtering" to the unity of Nigeria?
I have always believed in the unity of nigeria. It is true that there have been some renewed calls for a break-up but it is my personal opinion that every tribe and interests are better protected in one united country, instead of having to exist as smaller independent countries.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. I had the best of childhood years. My parents taught me to believe in myself and my dreams. I had friends from different tribes and maybe that is why i have always been open-minded in my political life and in my writings.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Indie authors appealed to me because they strive to promote new authors. I also admire their professionalism. And I hope to publish more works through their establishment.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The ability of articulating my messages and inspirations into a book is a source of tremendous joy to me. And most importantly, having people tell me that my book has inspired them makes me feel fulfilled.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a collection of hundred poems. My poems are abstracts of war, emotions, love, death and other processes of life
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors are Frederick Forsyth, Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Adichie.
