Interview with Adam Gowans

Published 2017-05-24.
When did you first start writing?
In junior high. I reference the experience that first started me writing in the acknowledgements for "On Angelic Wings."
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Learning who my characters are and what motivates them. I usually have a basic idea of who they are and how their story ends, but I don't really get to know them until I start writing. Sometimes I learn something new about them even after the story has ended.
What are you working on next?
I have three novels I'm in the different areas of the writing process with. My editor is currently reviewing my next novel I will publish. I'm in the "set it aside for now" phase of my third, and I am writing the sequel to "On Angelic Wings."
Who are your favorite authors?
Rainbow Rowell, Jane Austen, JK Rowling, Marie Lu, Kasie West. To name a few. It's mostly series that I am interested in.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Earning enough money so I can survive to the next day to get out of bed.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working and indulging myself in other stories (books, movies, tv shows, video games, etc).
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Amazon recommendations, browsing in bookstores/through Amazon.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I'm not sure if it was the first, but it was called "The Good Queen Alien Returns." It was slightly based off Independence Day. I was in elementary school.
What is your writing process?
The story idea or characters come first. I usually figure out the basic plot and the ending before I sit down to write in my notebook. I write in longhand first, in sections and with a blue pen, before I type, which I can do edits along the way.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I can't. I wasn't a huge reader until my brother brought home "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and told me to read it. I read it within 24 hours. I was almost 13 years old.
How do you approach cover design?
I ask myself what image or scene/event in the novel can best convey the tone of the novel.
Describe your desk
Cluttered, with at least one notebook on it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I've lived in four different states and in South Korea. Understandably, travel and change is part of my stories.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It felt like the right time to start publishing, with or without the help of a publisher.
What do your fans mean to you?
The realization of my dream. That my stories are worth telling.
What do you read for pleasure?
I've been reading less fantasy lately. Mostly lighter novels. I love most of Rainbow Rowell's novels and have just finished Jenny Han's "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" novels.
