Interview with Baron R. W. Lewis

What are you working on next?
Working on a story arc which was once called Space Opera, due to the mix of science fiction, fantasy, and driven by individual centered motives. This Space Opera will be a break from my original efforts which were based on the mix of direct personal experiences and research into the more adult story arc.
Who are your favorite authors?
Tom Clancy, who I met when he was a member of the same war-game club while in the army stationed at Fort Myers. Allen Drury known for Advise & Consent, the writing team of William Forstchen and Newt Gingrich creating alternative history arcs, the unfortunate career cut short Stieg Latsson-the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Added to this list is Samuel Shellabarger, Robert Heinlein, Issac Asimov, among others who I have reread many times over and recommend.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
That the higher powers over our existance allowed due to the fact I by all odds should not be alive today which in time forced for medical reasons an early retirement. In this retirement my creator has granted me another day to live, enjoy with new memories to make, story arc to write-create and all the joy and pain that is part of living-existing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Even in retirement my body may be impaired, but the mind is not so I continue serving my community in local elective office, just this last November 2013 re-elected to my 6th term of four years. Spending time in research, reading of course, watching once out of bed up cup of coffee in hand observing the horizon change from velvet black, to a deep blue and just before sunrise the golden band of lavender as that horizon becomes bright yellow on clear mornings. Each day I continue to live by the motto "keep moving otherwise as I observed those who stop start dying."
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Research-Research and more RESARCH!
What is your writing process?
There is the seed of a story arc planted by my muse, which germinates deep in my brain, to sprout in a framework bare bones story arc. Which fleshes out into a very rough error filled draft that is examined, pulled apart-reworked-redrafted so many times I no longer count. The few e published efforts were at a minimum for the short ones almost a year in this personal creative process. Those that are released I still feel there is more to be done, how I do not know as yet for from time to time I revisit them still making a rare improvement.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
What triggered my writing muse is squarely the responsibility of my life companion, the circumstances attached that mail order bride who weather explained as fate, karma or destiny that brought us together. Her introduction of the works of Asian Manga and anime starting first with Ranma 1/2 in which in it's "anything go's" story arcs brought forth the realization if those authors, illustrators and artists could do it why not me.
How do you approach cover design?
Once the story arc is finally-finally going to lease the cover is an attempt to convey the core of the story. Example in the introduction An Ugly Truth-Beginning Prologue the use of the draft illustrations, whereas in the follow up Pony Girl Rescue the image of dancers legs on stage.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I must say there are more than five, but because of the question here are a sample of the five;
Prince of Foxes, a fictional look into history based on true factual foundations, populated by individual drives and desires.
The Federalist Papers, a hard read in the 18th Century pose but the all in one combined argument for limited Constitutional Government, with there in the explanation of the warning signs of the growth of tyranny and the lost of individual freedom or I should state the return to enslavement of the individual to a all powerful, directing everyone's life government.
Everything by Robert Heinlein because they are linked, a connected Science Fiction story arc described by critic Henry Kutter a romantic humanist exposing the linkage of humans, technology and science.
The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo, an introduction to the evil which exists in human beings and that such evil does exist.
Last of the five on a higher note The Complete Unexpurgated Scripts of Monty Python's Flying Circus-"AS a naval officer I abhor the implication that the Royal Navy is a haven for cannibalism."
What do you read for pleasure?
That is a easy question to answer, simply everything I can get in front of my pair of eyes.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a godsend for the independent author for the first time there is a means without a gatekeeper which censors, blocks, makes the decision of who and what can be published. Now via the Smashwords internet site anyone can get published, yes there is no guaranty the effort will be read or sell, that success is in the hands of the author, it is the responsibility of the author to break through this now vastly expanded market.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Believe on or as I put words in front of my pair of eyes, my emotions are fully engaged I smile, laugh and have tears while in my imagination I see the story, the world, those individuals being created.
