Interview with AJ Benson

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids. I want them to believe in pursuing their dreams with passion.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a single mom with two kids, three dogs and two cats. There's not much spare time to be had! I do read, and I am active in my sons' scout troop and at church. I also get in a workout here and there.
Who are your favorite authors?
I am a big fan of some of the classics. I am inspired by JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis. I also love JK Rowling, John Flanagan, and Rick Riodan.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
That's a hard question! When I was a kid, it had to be The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Now, I have to add in The Hobbit, and the Harry Potter series. (Yes, I am counting them as one!) I love His Princess Love Letters, and I also enjoyed Jesus Calling.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually have books recommended by friends!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I joke that there is always a story in my head being held prisoner and it's my job to let it out! There is some truth to it though. Writing is about the joy of letting the story out, and, even more importantly, sharing it with people. I hope when people read my work that they feel uplifted.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I was in third grade and I wrote a ghost story!
What is your writing process?
I like to plan out a story arc, and then flesh out the pinch points. That way I have a vector set. When I start to write, though, the characters have minds of their own and sometimes I need to revise my outline!
How do you approach cover design?
There has got to be an image in the book that stands out to me that is a pivotal point in the story. I use that to inspire the choice I use.
What are you working on next?
My next project is a fantasy novel called The Sword of Ferbandey. It's about a young teen who discovers in her dreams that she's a magicae--one of seven races gifted magic by the Source in the beginning. She and her friends will have to find an ancient sword to protect both the dream realm and the waking one from a growing evil.
