Interview with A.K. Downs

What's the story behind your latest book?
We were inspired by a Christmas tree that we purchased last year. It was in sad shape from being mistreated by the retailer. However, it sparked our creativity to tell its story and the people who found it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
We have wanted to publish a book for a very long time. Finally, we were successful through the kindness of another author who showed us how to use Smashwords.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Writing a book can be an intimidating process, but publishing seemed the hardest part. Now with Smashwords, we know how easy it can be to share cherished stories with other readers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
A.K. Downs is a reading teacher, so she knows how important it is to read stories each day with our children. A.K. was fortunate to have R. Brooks and C. Fennessy willing to support the story of Tommy finding his family and Dougie finding his family!
What do your fans mean to you?
We wrote the book to share the Christmas spirit with others. Both authors have had difficult holiday seasons, but we strongly believe that the best part of the human spirit is to never give up. We hope that our first Christmas book will bring families closer as they read throughout the season.
What are you working on next?
Our next book involves a K-9 police officer, and of course, we would enjoy writing another story about Dougie's adventures on the tree farm. We appreciate the opportunity to share our stories with readers.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
A.K. Downs grew up the daughter of a dedicated reading teacher. She was known as Mrs. Downs' daughter instead of her first name. It was strange as a young child, but through the wise eyes of maturity, she realizes that the other students knew her mother's name because she was a good teacher who cared about their ability to read. Literacy is so important. E-books give us the opportunity to write, read, and share more stories with each other; we hope that more and more people continue to read.
What is your writing process?
As new authors, Downs and Brooks were inspired by their own Christmas tree and life experiences for this book. In the future, we hope to create other stories to inspire and share positive thoughts and feelings with our readers, both young and old.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
As children, we were inspired by so many authors, such as Dr. Seuss, Maurice Sendak, Shel Silverstein, Margery Williams, and P.L. Travers. As adults, we continue to enjoy both fiction and non-fiction titles by too many authors to list here. Laugh, we have never met a book we did not like, just maybe ones we would not read again.
How do you approach cover design?
Our illustrator, C. Fennessy, did a wonderful job based on our descriptions of bringing Tommy, his family, and Dougie to life. We appreciate her talents very much!
