Interview with Angela Krout

What is your e-reading device of choice?
None. There is nothing like the smell and feel of an actual printed book. Plus, you can't get your favorite author to autograph an e-book.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Facebook. Word of Mouth. Friends and Family.
Describe your desk
Neat. With a side of cats. I have two cats and a kitten who use my desk to sleep, bathe, and explicitly tell me how much I'm failing as a cat mom.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Southeast Missouri. While the area didn't influence me, my grandfather did. His dialect, colloquialisms, and stories have been irrevocably etched into my brain.
When did you first start writing?
When I was 5. I wrote a three-page essay, by hand, about how much I wanted to be a Forest Ranger when I grew up. My kindergarten teacher retired three years ago and sent me a photocopy of that essay. She had used it as a teaching tool. I admit I was really moved.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Published work? That's easy. It's wrapping up a trilogy. The most current book I'm writing is about people behaving badly in a religious situation. Not a Christian religion either.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have a story to tell. One that I wanted to keep creative control over. That is something (the creative control) that gets taken away from mass market authors. Not me. I want complete and total control.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's early days yet. I'll revisit this question every 30 days and let you know!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Taking my readers to places that I've been, if only in my mind.
What do your fans mean to you?
The WORLD. You can't ever replace your fans. They make you or break you as an author.
What are you working on next?
A book about people behaving badly. I get really fired up about how sanitized most people perceive certain religions and it's time I brought that to light. With love and humor of course. The names will be changed to protect the guilty of course, but every time I sit down to write it I laugh so hard I have to leave my desk. So that makes it slow going. When I ever do get this book published, it's going to be a scream.
Who are your favorite authors?
J.K Rowling, Stephen King, Tolkien, Jane Austen, V.C. Andrews, Danielle Steele, Nora Roberts, and so many more. SO MANY.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The promise of adventure.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, reading, crocheting, house staff to the cats, being a mom, traveling (Colorado is a favorite family destination), and traversing Missouri's backroads.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I do not read ebooks.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was 5. It was about how I wanted to be a Forest Ranger.
What is your writing process?
Am I supposed to have a process? I just write when the mood strikes.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." by Dr. Maya Angelou. It impacts me to this day. I want to be able to weave stories like she does.
How do you approach cover design?
With a blowtorch
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I have much more than 5 on that list. I can not and will not pick an all-time favorite.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything that catches my attention. I've gone to Half Price Books looking for one book and left with 20 because they caught my attention.
