Interview with Alan Strachan

When did you first start writing?
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have ridden horses since a teenager and owned 7 horses at one time. Luckily I had the property to allow them to graze. Horses are expensive to keep. But everyone was different. In fact our old "lady" mare was 30 years old when she passed on and had lived with us since a foal.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The new age of ebooks. Trying to find a publisher is a long, time consuming and frustrating process. Indie books are great for new authors
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Not yet, still hoping and waiting. But that is the good thing about smashwords. You can sit and wait, as long as you help out where you can. No publisher breathing down your neck.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Unfortunately there are too many things going on in my head to get all down on paper. I have tried voice operated programs but it is not the same. Patience and eventually what you want to say comes through
What do your fans mean to you?
I hope to be able to tell them soon when my book hits the best sellers!
What are you working on next?
My autobiography, I have had a fairly eventful life working with wildlife. And I am updating two earlier books. Both of course involving animals.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love fantasy. David Gemmel, i have all his books and read them over and over. Terry Pratchett and of course, "Lord of the Rings" I've read 7 times.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I live in South Africa and work with wildlife. I am privileged to have the sun and wildlife on my doorstep
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working!!! I enjoy art and using my hands to make things. Something different from working with animals but they all end up the same, animal paintings, animal figures. Just can't win!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have an EZ reader, which gives me problems every nw and then but I look around the internet for the latest from my favourites
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No, I did a lot of short stories and articles when i was younger and many were published but i think the very first story was a DIY article. I even got paid for it and it was on how to make a frame to paint on.
What is your writing process?
I sit and let things flow out of my head. Then I sit down, read it and try to plan what I am getting at, then detail and then begin
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
That's why I enjoy Fantasy, the first books i ever chose for myself from the public library were a series of books about a young man name"Kemlo" It was an SF/Fantasy series of stories. What they were about I cannot remember. The reason I am hooked on Fantasy began then, and I believe in Fairies and other mythical creatures.
How do you approach cover design?
I have an idea of what is in my head and am very fortunate to now understand how to use Photoshop!!!! So I can generally get what I am aiming for. Not that i have done many covers!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Lord of the Rings
The Hobbitt
All of David Gemmel
All of Terry Pratchett
That gives us about 50 books
What do you read for pleasure?
Fantasy, newspapers,to keep up with what is going on, low tech magazines. Unfortunately my reader has frozen and i am trying to get it unstuck as i have a couple of new Terry Pratchett calling out to me.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I still enjoy the feel of paper but I am looking at the newer readers at the moment. My old one is too small for me now. When I increase the fonts because of my eyesight it is almost a word a page!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Still learning from Smashwords
Describe your desk
Large, cluttered with 5 different projects I am busy with. BUT on the wall in front of me is my gallery of framed pictures of where I've been, my friends and Donald Duck. All for inspiration
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Edinburgh, Scotland. I was quite good at school on essays but only started writing when i moved to South Africa many years later. Although all my books have at least one Scotsman in them
