My siblings and I grew up listening to mom's stories about her childhood experiences in Japan during World War II. As she grew older, she began urging us to write down her stories so they would not be forgotten. In February 2014, I began working with her to pull together the various fragments of her memories and place them in chronological order. Mom's health began to decline rapidly at the beginning of summer and she was later diagnosed with stage four cancer in July. Although severely weakened from her illness, she was happy and proud to hold a printed rough draft of her story in her hands. She eventually passed away in August at the age of 83. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have worked with her on such a meaningful project. I hope you will enjoy her stories as much I have!
