Interview with Breanna Hayse

Describe your desk
It's a mishmash of antique and modern- a beautiful late 1800 curved writing desk with a leather top and carved wood; to the right is a mid-1800 quill pen and ink set, to the left, an 1902 victrola music box. In the center in a larger than life iMAC. It's a place of creativity that take me whereever I want to go--my very special time machine.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was a DoD dependant and moved quite frequently as a child, so when we ended up in Altamonte Springs, Florida, writing was a way for me to maintain stability and normality. The Generals Daughter series was originally written during my teenage years and gave me a family that I lacked in the real world. My first book, The Game Plan that was originally published in 2012 (a BDSM age-play story that was the springboard for all the contemporary age-play books flooding the market) was set in the scene that represented my home town.
When did you first start writing?
Officially, I was twelve.
What's the story behind your latest book?
All my books are inspired by either my clients (I'm a therapist and work with people in alternative lifestyles). The most recent one, Saddlesore Ranch, deals with the conflict of a young woman whose best friend is dying of AIDS, the daughter he's leaving behind, and a new love that enters her life. It provokes all emotions and discusses the different feelings that come with both good and bad choices, the decision to explore something new to conquor fear, and the love of family. I am very excited about it- plus the first months proceeds with be donated to the AIDS foundation.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted creative freedom in my stories, including the covers, and got fed up with editors putting their own kinks into my books — especially things that went against my personal ethics. I'm also a life-styler in BDSM and was greatly disturbed when those who knew nothing about the dynamic would alter my words. Needless to say, between the politics, the publishers pushing to write a book a month, constantly fighting over horrendous cover art that had nothing to do with my book, and the lack of accountability regarding the financial obligations (i.e., paying on time and/or giving a statement of sales), my joy of writing was stripped. Becoming indie was the best thing I have ever done and my joy has returned! I even started my own company, Twisted Hearts Productions, where the authors are in charge of their own work and get the highest royalties available for their hard work.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's provided a quick and easy platform to distribute my works to multiple companies. With limited time between writing and working, I truly appreciate the ease and convience of distribution.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
How it has helped my readers in dealing with difficult issues and gives direction for problem solving. Many of my books are used by fellow therapists as a means to help clients who are struggling with a myriad of different issues. When I get a fan letter stating how a book touched their heart, helped their marriage, or taught them something about themselves, it truly humbles me.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are my everything. I will do anything for my fans and they know it. They know that I will always answer back, make myself available to talk if they need me, and, when in my area, a one-on-one meeting. Without them, I would never have gotten to the point I have (55 plus titles).
What are you working on next?
I've got several works in progress right now, but mainly focusing up on finishing some of my series. My fans have been yelling at me for years to write The End Zone (the final book of the trilogy The Game Plan and Time Out), so that is one of my priorities.
Who are your favorite authors?
James Patterson, Clive Barker, George R.R. Martin
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The alarm clock screaming at me from across the room. I am NOT a morning person, but my casework starts at 0600 every morning. I can't wait to get home and write... or take a nap zzzzzz
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My husband and I love to go out exploring different places with our dogs, and I am a little addicted to reality TV--but other than my regular job, I spend as much time writing as possible.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have very little time to read for fun nowadays- between my own books, the authors I edit for my company, and teaching new author writing classes, my plate is full. I do write an article for Kinky Literature as their Sexpert (kinkyliterature.com) who has an amazing list of ebooks available. I also subscribe to multiple newsletters.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The Generals Daughter when I was twelve through seventeen, it ended up being over 2000 hand typed pages. I rewrote it as an adult, but the love I have for that story has never waivered.
What is your writing process?
I'm a pantser. An inspiration strikes me from so many different sources-- antiquing, people watching, reality shows, personal conflicts, my clients' struggles... once that first sentence starts, the characters in the story drives it. I just let it go and wait to see what happens. Once all the words stop rattling in my head, I edit and edit and edit.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
LOL, it was a historical romance by Catherine Coulter that I stole from under my mother's bed. The fatter the book, the more I wanted to read it. I was drawn to the strong, stubborn women and equally strong, stubborn men who earned their love and trust. I guess I've always been drawn to the Alpha male thing--hence explaining my lifestyle choice, lol.
How do you approach cover design?
My cover artist is amazing. She knows me so well that I rarely have to even go beyond a basic description and will work on it until it feels 'right' and compliments the story while expressing my brand. There have been several occasions when she's designed a cover and I've written a book around it because it was so inspiring.
