Interview with A. Lopez, Jr

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Texas, just outside of Houston. The region is multi-cultural and the landscape is of trees bordered by water (I love the water, be it a lake, river, stream, or ocean). The land and its surroundings provide great windows into creative worlds for my fiction writing. There is a lot of history and old tales that provide ample avenues to bring fiction to life.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I prefer using my iPad as my e-reading device. With it, I can choose from the many retailers to select a book to read.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Through trial and error, I have found that using a mailing list has been the most effective way for marketing. Twitter is also great to get the word out, but building a loyal email list has been beneficial, and more than that, it has created author/fan relationships that can't be beat!
When did you first start writing?
I first wrote in high school. I wrote two short movie scripts - handwritten and long since lost - and had my sights set on making a homemade movie. As time went on, and being a teenager, other interests came into play and the writing bug faded. In 2009, just as the Indie-Publishing was gaining traction, i set out to write horror fiction. It takes a lot of time and constant adjustments to the craft to get better, but it is a great learning experience as I churn out each new story.
Describe your desk
My desk takes on many forms at different times. I have a main desk in the study nestled near a window in the corner of the room. Outside of the house, my best place to write (desk) would have to be a table at my local Barnes & Noble. I really enjoy the atmosphere and being surrounding by thousands of books. It really gets the creative juices flowing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My motivation to write comes from within, be it indie or not. I don't think I really thought of a 'title' of what I would be. But I will say, I carry the title of 'Indie Author' with pride and take it very serious and respect the craft of writing very much. My goal is to produce the best work I can, and with that, contribute to the literary world in my own way and own style.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is a short story based on a dream, actually...a nightmare. A teenager I know came to me to tell me about a dream he had. The details and his description of his night terror were so vivid and clear. I had a sense that he was telling me about it, not just because I write horror, but also in an attempt to speak to someone about it who would understand. I asked him if it was okay if I took notes and he said okay and some time later I asked him if he wouldn't mind me writing a story about his dream. In the next two months I crafted a world around his nightmare to give it a beginning and ending. He was pleased with the result and I published "My Inhuman Condition" in October of 2017.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been great for me and any writer who uses Smashwords to distribute their work. For me, to have a distributor to make the publishing process easier and to get my books into as many hands as possible makes success a much easier process. But I can't measure success in sales, I measure it in finishing a book and seeing it published in all the retailers with the help of Smashwords. To be able to focus on the writing and not worry about the distribution makes everything easier in my writing world.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy in writing for me is the creative process. The moment an idea springs to life and the mind goes to work plotting that first draft in my head. Don't get me wrong, there is great joy in completing a story after all the time and blood, sweat, and tears, but the spark of that first new idea is a great joy!
Who are your favorite authors?
I write primarily in the horror genre, so it goes without saying that Stephen King is my favorite. I also enjoy Bentley Little, Richard Laymon, Brian Keene, H.P. Lovecraft, and Joe McKinney. Outside of horror, Michael Crichton takes the cake with Mario Puzo a close second. Of course there are many more, but you get the idea.
What do your fans mean to you?
I know this will sound cliche, but fans mean everything. It doesn't matter what field you provide entertainment in because the fans are always the base and the ones who stand behind you and support you and give you the extra passion to continue producing your best work. I never want to let my fans down, be it one fan or thousands. Each one is very important to me and that can not be stated enough. For an author, we work months and years to write that book and get it ready for the masses, but it takes the fans to pick up your book and read it. They are spending their valuable time to consume something you have created and I want them to be entertained and satisfied at the end. It is hard to measure the importance of the fandom concerning my books because it means everything.
What are you working on next?
I have a few projects in progress, two in my favorite genre of horror and two involving my passion for sports and baseball. One will be a biography of a Hall of Fame softball manager and friend. It is a different animal altogether writing non-fiction but I am absolutely enjoying the ride. The title is "While Daring Greatly". The other baseball story reflects on my childhood and the great summers we had playing ball at the end of our block. It will be a mix of fact and fiction as I create characters to fit into my baseball world so many years ago. "The Dead End Boys" will be out this summer. The horror writings are in full motion and no titles have been set just yet, but Halloween is always a good time to release a scary story, don't you think?
