Interview with Amanda Linehan

When did you first start writing?
I first started writing fiction in the summer of 2009. I found a couple of flash fiction prompts and completed two stories that I felt pretty good about. That fall, in November, I participated in NaNoWriMo and wrote my first novel.

That novel will always just be practice, and will remain on my computer for the duration of it's life. ;)
What is your writing process?
My writing process is always, at least a little bit, in flux. Currently, I get an idea (often while driving) or I go from a writing prompt and simply begin writing the story. I don't outline or make any notes, although I may have thought about the idea at length depending on when it first popped in my mind, I just sit down in front of my laptop and let the story take shape as my fingers move across the keyboard.

This is a scary, but exciting, way to write. There is always the possibility that I will write myself into a place that I can't get out of, or that I will inadvertently introduce some horrible inconsistency that I can't fix later on. This hasn't happened yet (fingers crossed!), but there is always the risk that it will. I think that's why I like it. ;)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My e-reading device of choice is a Kindle Paperwhite. Second is my iPhone. If you had told me when I was younger that one day I would read on a screen a few inches big, I just wouldn't have believed you.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I really like to be physically active (especially since writing involves being in my head so much), so I practice yoga, hike, walk, and get to the gym on a regular basis. I love to read (duh), and I also enjoy cooking as well as eating out, so I'm always trying new restaurants and going out to favorite ones again and again.

I enjoy traveling, although recently I haven't done that as much as I would like. Oh, and I love the beach - both laying on the sand and swimming in the ocean.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up, and still live to this day, in Maryland. In fact, I have lived in Maryland for every year of my life except for one, when I studied abroad in Belgium.

I don't know that where I grew up plays a direct role in my writing, but my young adult novels ("Uncover" and "Dragon") are set in an unnamed, unidentified place that I described very similarly to where I grew up and went to high school. So I guess I actually did use where I grew up as a model for the setting even though I don't call it out as such.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Using my imagination. Completing a long project (in the case of a novel, or even a short story if you consider the publishing process too). Exploring creative boundaries. Getting to know my characters.
