Interview with Amy Braun

What do your fans mean to you?
So much!! Honestly, I can't be more grateful to readers and bloggers and bookstagrammers who show support with comments and reviews and just kind words. They really do make all the difference and can easily make an author's day. So if any fan is reading this, THANK YOU!!!
What are you working on next?
At the time of writing this interview, I'm working on a YA fantasy that will be submitted to agents and hopefully publishers. I'm also going to be starting work in the third book in the AREIOS BROTHERS series, which is scheduled for a winter 2019/2020 release. I'm very excited about both these projects and can't wait to see what happens with them!
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh wow, this list could go on forever if I picked all of them. I think if I really, really, realllllly had to narrow it down, it would be Michael J. Sullivan, Sarah J. Maas, and Jay Kristoff.

Sullivan writes just the most beautiful stories and brings so much emotion to his work. Maas has the career I dream of and works hard to bring drama and unforgettable characters to the page. Kristoff writes the highly detailed worlds, darkness, and stellar creativity to the page.

Again, this is cherry-picking the first three authors who came to mind. I have way too many favourites who I adore for different reasons. I'm somebody who reads just as much as she writes.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Honestly, writing does! I have my own routine that I follow as regularly as possible, and it helps me work on projects. I make tons of lists so I can track my progress, and nothing is more satisfying than crossing something off a list.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend most of my free time writing or promoting, but on my off time I read, travel, colour, play video games, and watch anime or movies. I also confess that I'm a huge fan of watching random videos on Youtube. Puppies get me every time.
How do you discover the indie books you read?
Sometimes I browse Goodreads or spot something on Amazon, but honestly the biggest way is through promotion. I take part in a semi-regular promotion offered by Patty Jensen, and will sometimes find a book that catches my eye. If the blurb and cover look promising, it goes on my list!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh boy, do I ever. There are actually two of them: One was a post-apocalyptic mutant cross-over I wrote with a friend, and the other was an action adventure with treasure hunting that may or may not have been fan fiction.

My teenage years were weird.
What is your writing process?
Typically, I start with an idea or a character that pops into my head. From there, I'll begin building the world and character arcs and fitting them into the plot. After I write the first draft, I go through and edit it, fill in the blanks and connect the dots. Next it goes to the editor while I make arrangements for the cover and the promotions. Then it's on the way to preorders and releasing! That the basic gist, assuming I don't get bogged down with re-writes. It's a long process, and worth every second!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I can't exactly recall the very first book, but I do remember two that had a great impact on my career. LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT are the books I remember transporting me into a fantasy world and making me fall in love with it. I still have my original copies from nearly two decades ago. I was also deeply interested in Greek mythology, which has been hugely impactful on my choice of career and what I like my characters to face in my books. I also still have that beloved paperback on my shelves. Both brought me joy and whisked me away on adventures with heroes and monsters, and that is exactly what I try and portray in my stories.
How do you approach cover design?
I give it all to Deranged Doctor Design! They are a great company who have done most of my independent releases. Often I just fill out the form they give me and trust them to do an amazing job. Which they always do!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Oh, this is just as hard as the favourite authors question! Let's go with top five favourite series:

1. Sarah J. Maas' books (all of them, let's be real)
2. Michael J. Sullivan's books (see above)
3. The Nevernight Chronicles
4. Red Rising
5. Monstress (a graphic novel series that I'm addicted to)

A little leeway, perhaps, but again, I have hundreds of books that I'm addicted to, and I always seem to add to my list.
