Interview with Amy Martin

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read pretty much anything I can get my hands on--everything from magazines to the latest Young Adult fiction. I spend way too much time on social media (Facebook and Twitter are my favorites), and I love watching sports. I also love hanging out with my husband and cat watching movies.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in grade school, and I was a creative writing major for a while in college. I'd always give up creative writing for a while and then come back to it. For example, in my twenties, I was working on a graduate degree and writing mostly academic papers and articles. By my early thirties, I was getting burned out on academic writing and needed to refocus my brain, so to speak. So, I turned to creative writing to help my academic writing, and now I find I can't give up creative writing and go back.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. In the fourth grade, I wrote and illustrated a book called The President's Daughter, which I gave to my teacher as a present at the end of the year. The book was about a girl my age adjusting to life in the White House and being followed around by Secret Service all the time. Maybe I should rewrite it and publish it. :)
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I take book blogger recommendations very seriously. I follow several on Twitter, and when I see a few of them all tweeting about the same book, I'm usually curious enough to check that book out.
Describe your desk
I have an L-shaped desk that is--at the moment--pretty clean and organized. My computer is on the short end of the L, and I have print copies of my books on the other end of the L. I'm hoping to get a printer soon so I can look at printed copies of my drafts. I also keep pictures of my family and other trinkets around (I like to use empty wine bottles as flower-holders, for example) to give me something to look at while I work.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love being able to create worlds and reach readers. Knowing that people read my writing--complete strangers, no less--and like it is incredible to me.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are amazing, and I love interacting with them. Sometimes, an email or a review from a fan totally turns a crappy day around for me. I love hearing about how my books have impacted their lives.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on the final book in The Perfects series at the moment along with a standalone YA novel. I've always got something in the works. :)
