Interview with Amy Parker

Published 2016-06-18.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Things You Can Do With A Brick - interesting story. I'd read Marbles by Ellen Forney, and at one point she discusses tests of creativity, and her example was thinking of how many uses you could find for a brick. And there'd been a preview of a movie where police interrogators were making a woman stand on a brick. The two came together in my head one night, and the first draft of the story came out in a rush. It's stylistically unusual, but I'm pleased with it.
When did you first start writing?
I'm not sure exactly when I started. Like many kids, I was making up stories from an early age. In second grade, a poem I wrote was included in our school district's magazine. After that, I grew up with the idea of writing and being a writer.
How do you approach cover design?
I work with talented people. For my first three stories, I hired a cover designer off the Smashwords list. I have a friend who's a photographer, Eva Auto, and she's kind enough to read my work and takes photos that can be used for covers.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have an iPad, and it's very multi-purpose. I also have a phone that does Google Books, which I particularly like, as you can open those up in a web browser.
What do you read for pleasure?
A lot of different things. Mainly fiction, with a lot of fantasy and sci-fi, but I'm not exclusively into any one genre. I get these enthusiasms where I suddenly read a lot of Dickens, or an entire series of murder mysteries, or every history book I can find on a certain topic.
Describe your desk
I don't really have a desk. I write either on my sofa, or out in a coffee shop.
What are you working on next?
I have several stories lined up, and am looking at branching out into a series of connected stories.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I knew some successful indie authors, and I wanted to get my work out.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a very useful way of managing self-publishing. I don't know if I could manage an endless stream of accounts, and with Smashwords, I don't have to! And I appreciate the guidance they provide on making sure work looks professional. I learned a lot.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'm always thrilled to have fans. There's nothing like the feeling, knowing someone's read my work, and found joy in it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to travel, and have been to many exciting places. I draw. I read a lot. And I do scuba diving. I keep wanting to incorporate that into a story, because underwater is so different from what people expect.
