Interview with Rita Carla Francesca Monticelli

Published 2020-11-28.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on translating the Detective Eric Shaw Trilogy in English.
What is your latest work about?
My latest release in Italian is "Nave stellare Aurora" (Starship Aurora), the fifth (and last) book in the Aurora Saga. This is a hard science fiction novel set in the next century that combines elements of real science and speculations about a future of humanity technologically influenced by the contact with an ancient alien entity. At the same time it follows the psychological journey of its protagonists, both human and non-human, who, as they approach the fulfilment of their desires, must face fears for the future full of uncertainties that awaits them, and realise that ultimately in life the journey could be better than the long coveted destination. The only solution is perhaps to be ready to leave for the next one.
The book includes four parts respectively set in London, the far side of the Moon, on board of Starship Aurora and in the mysterious destination of its journey in the Alpha Centauri system.

My latest release in English is "Kindred Intentions". It's an action-packed British thriller with a romantic twist. Amelia Jennings is a City of London Police office for just a week, when she is sent by Detective Monroe to play the mole at the law firm Goldberg & Associates. A few lawyers of this firm were murdered by a hired killer and the police think one of the clients is behind these crimes.
She is waiting to make the final job interview, when she meets a possible competitor, Mike Connor. Her only concern is that the man can get the job position in her place, nullifying the efforts of her team.
But just five minutes later the waiting room becomes the scene of a shooting.
What is your writing process?
The idea for a story comes in different ways. Most of times I just have a single glimpse in a scene and a title, then I add elements like the ending, the beginning and two plot points. Finally I start writing notes, plenty of them! The outline comes next. When the time for the real writing comes, I sit in front of my PC and start with the first scene. Normally I do writing sessions of 4-5 hours and I write about 2,000 words during each of them. I always stick to the scene order I have decided, never skip a scene just because it is a bit harder to manage. Actually those days I don't feel in the mood for writing I force myself to do that anyway, and to my surprise my best pages come from those days.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite author is no doubt Thomas Harris. I like the way he is able to show you evil and make you like evil characters like Hannibal Lecter. Actually my favourite book is "Hannibal" where there isn't any real good character.
Another author that I like very much and who is my favourite science fiction author is Peter F. Hamilton. I like his peculiar style with very long scenes, his unbelievable imagination in creating future worlds, and his great skill in shaping realistic characters whom you really care for.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Beside all the work I do for promoting my books, I love reading (of course), going to the movies, travelling, experiencing many different types of art and anything is able to give me good emotions. And I must admit that a part of me is still writing even when I'm doing other things, maybe not directly, but it is surely preparing what I'm going to write next.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly by chance. Sometimes I just browse on an online store, jumping from a book to another, following the suggestions. Other times I read about an ebook on a social network or on a blog.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh, my... I was a young girl, and the story was set in Australia. I can't remember the story itself, but it was part of a written exam. My professor was really amazed by my imagination.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I think it was "Little Women". My mother had given it to me. It took me a month to read it, I was a child and it wasn't so easy for me to spend my time in front of a book, but I remember well I felt caught by the story in some scenes. I think I started liking books in that very moment.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The idea that I'm going to be productive and be proud of myself at the end of the day, hopefully also by doing some good writing.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm quite skilled in drawing. That is a good thing as I don't have to count on an external artist, or at least I'm not forced to. I love putting a character in the cover, and adding a background reporting some details from the plot. Anyway it depends on the book. Every book is different and requires a different approach regarding its cover.
What do you read for pleasure?
I always read for pleasure! I mean, reading is a pleasure to me whether I read fiction or non-fiction. It's a way to enrich my soul that makes me happy. I like reading a lot of different genres, with a particular regard for science fiction. But to tell the truth what I look for are stories with great characters, that is stories in which the human element is very strong. Besides science fiction, I like crime thrillers, historical fiction (especially if set in ancient Egypt), but also literary fiction (not sad stories, please), and non-fiction related to egyptology and astronomy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I own a Kindle DX. I love it because its screen is big. I'm quite fast in reading so having a regular Kindle would mean me to continuously click for turning the pages. Moreover it has got a keyboard which allows me to easily add comments. I also use it during the final revision of my books. And its battery lasts (nearly) forever!
