Interview with J.C. Vintner

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords enables authors to reach new audiences through many different platforms. This is absolutely great for helping new readers discover your books and drive awareness to your hard work.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Connecting and sharing knowledge with others is an important passion of mine. Writing helps document research, thoughts, and propose perplexing questions from several different scientific disciplines. Publishing thoughtful works for others to read, comment on, and provide constructive opinions on interesting subject matter is one of the greatest joys a writer could ask.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans, readers, supporters, and fellow research investigators are all contributing to help rediscover our past in ways previously unimagined and by far an important part, to writing helpful, informational non-fiction that several disciplines can agree upon. Writing to share knowledge is one thing, but without readers and those interested in the subjects, it would become increasingly difficult to understand how people really feel about some of these perplexing discussions.
What are you working on next?
There are at least two defined research works in progress detailing new subjects, and quite a few starter ideas for future topics jotted down, waiting to blossom into the literary realm.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Being able to share learning on a daily basis is a great motivation to get out of bed. Reader feedback, supportive interest, exploring new realms, new ideas, and discovering lesser known parts of human history are all exciting! The question rather, in this case would be, do you stay up late each day?
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Spending time with nature is another deep passion of mine and it's important for me to balance writing with exploring outdoors, experiencing all that mother nature has blessed us with. Earth is filled with an incredible amount of beauty and meaning!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I can clearly remember writing was for a high-school English class, involving a young man venturing out into the wild, only to discover something which would change a small town for good. It was this creative writing assignment which I became very entwined with, and the reaction of my English teacher inspired me to continue writing.
What is your writing process?
A lot of research. It's vital to understand the subjects inside out, and to understand what readers are looking for. Writing non-fiction requires a tireless effort to find the truth. Investigating fringe sciences exhibits its own set of challenges with many unexplored and unsupported claims. Digging through reports, historical records, and applying scientific method to subject matter is always part of the process to provide accurate knowledge from a non-bias perspective.
How do you approach cover design?
Designing covers and marketing materials for my books can, at times, take long periods of thought and consideration. It's important for the covers to convey subject matter accurately to the audience and attention to detail plays an important part. I feel the book jacket should be at least as interesting and inspirational as the content inside the book itself.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Becoming an indie author was at first intimidating and it was the challenge of self-publishing which became most enticing. The idea of being able to write freely, set my own deadlines, while fulfilling the creative process from start to finish is to me, the most motivating part of becoming and indie author.
