Interview with Angela Verdenius

Published 2018-07-06.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oohh - so many! Gemma Halliday, J.D. Robb, Darynda Jones, Laura Levine, Jill Shalvis, Stuart MacBride, Rob Thurman, Christine Feehan, Fran Rizer, Molly O'Hare, R.L. Mathewson, Brian Keene and so many more - a variety of authors from a variety of genres from romance to thrillers to horror.
What do your fans mean to you?
More than they'll ever know. I write for them as well as myself. If I can give joy to my readers and leave them with a smile on their faces when they've finished one of my books, I'm happy. When a fan contacts me, they always leave me with a smile on my face - I cherish those emails. Writing isn't always easy, things don't always flow, and we're only human, and sometimes it can be a real slog, so when I get an email from a fan saying how much they enjoyed my last book, it means a lot to me.
What are you working on next?
A new series with new characters and pets! I don't want to say more right now, but it's...nice ;-) It has all the things I love about romance - characters, pets, relationships, love and laughter.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have to earn a living to keep my cats in the comfort to which they've become accustomed, keep a roof over our heads, food in our bellies and the bills paid! Pretty much what makes most of us get out of bed! Plus each day is a gift (I work as a nurse in Palliative Care), so a new day is always something to get up for.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like watching thrillers, sci-fi and horror movies/TV series, as well as reading. Yep, that's pretty much a perfect day off for me!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I subscribe to my fav authors' newsletters, plus I follow them on ebook distributors on-line so I don't miss their newest releases. I also check out what's new in estores and get recommendations from fellow readers on places such as Good Reads and yahoo loops I belong to.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Wow..Enid Blyton's Famous Five?! I always wanted to eat those yummy picnics they always seemed to be having...
What do you read for pleasure?
This depends on my mood, as I read horror, thrillers, police procedures, romance, urban fantasy, true supernatural, cosy mysteries and some history
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a kindle. It was the first one I ever bought and that was some years ago - its one of the originals with the grey background and keyboard. My motto is - if it isn't broken, why change it? I love it.
Describe your desk has a hutch with notes stuck up on it, some inspirational posters I made up stuck on the back of it facing me, covers stuck up on the sides to inspire me on my current WIP, a printer, my desktop, a big notebook for keeping track of my current WIP and a little tray I keep a can of soft drink on, as well as several pens.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wrote for two epublishers who were really good to me, but I had some bad experiences with other publishers (as many of us do). I decided that I wanted to be in control of my own writing, writing what was in my heart, what I wanted to write, to take the characters where I wanted them to go, to have control over covers and stories, etc. Even with publishers you need to do all your own marketing and promo, so I thought I might as well take that extra step and control everything.
Oh geez, now I sound like a control freak!
In my day job I have bosses.
In my writing job, I am the boss!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating characters and stories that leave people smiling and feeling good about themselves. The world can be a tough place, and escapism is something I believe we all need. And smiling and feeling good? That gets us through the tough times and reminds us that the world can also be a wonderful place.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
They opened up a whole new world to me. It was with Smashwords that I first started indie pubbing. Their ability to distribute through other areas has made my books available in places I didn't know existed, and the team are wonderful at helping when I get stuck with something. I cannot recommend them enough.
