Interview with Anita Babic

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Waterdown, Ontario, Canada. This is just outside of Hamilton and Dundas. This was a simple small town, and although I moved to Toronto as an adult, I think the environment where you were raised stays with you forever. My writing is simple and straightforward, intended for young children. Perhaps the town I grew up did unconsciously influence my writing style.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing children's book in 2013. I am a new picture book author, with lots of ideas and passion to share with my fans.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book comes from my two little boys. The book's theme is sharing among siblings. This is a constant issue in our household with a 3 and 5 year old, and they are always growing and learning. I created my first book, Sharing Is Love- My brother and me, because they are enthusiastic readers and I believe that books strongly influence children. I wanted to improve their sharing habits through a simple picture book portraying two brothers (that happen to resemble them!).
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have been an entrepreneur for many years in my other business (Photography). I have wanted to be challenged and grow in a new creative industry for a long time. It was a natural decision to create an inspiring picture book for my boys, and then I decided to reveal it to the world.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I have enjoyed the creative freedom of writing, but this also pertains to the marketing element. Writing challenges the brain in ways not anticipated. There is so much to learn and so many great resources out there to learn from. I have very much enjoyed meeting others in this industry. Everyone is very helpful.
What do your fans mean to you?
I am new to the writing industry, so every fan and review means the world. It is essential to my growth, and I truly value those who take the time to read my book.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on my second book from the Sharing Is Love series; Sharing is Love- My sister and me. It is going great, and my illustrator and I working hard together.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids...whether I feel like getting up or not. But I have to say, to see what I can accomplish on my books each day is a huge motivation for getting out of bed lately. There is so much to do, and I am loving the process.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend my time with my boys. We are often outside, riding bikes, exploring through trails, at the park, visiting family and just keeping busy. My two boys are VERY active and high energy. If we are stuck in a house doing very little for hours then it is not fun for anyone!
What do you read for pleasure?
I have a subscription to People Magazine....its my relaxing, no-thinking reading on some nights. I also love reading autobiographies. I enjoy learning about others lives and what makes them tick. It is motivating.
