Interview with A.E. Wilman

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I have ever read myself was "The Ugly Duckling". I was seven then. I have heard the story before, but to be able to read it myself felt really great. I loved the story.
What is your writing process?
I write from time to time, but once I start writing a new book I cannot stop. Sometimes it takes me a few months to write a book, and sometimes it takes me a few weeks. It depends on the book. It took me three months to write "The Adventures of Socrates The Cat".
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Oscar Wilde "The Happy Prince and Other Stories" - I love every story in the collection because every story there is unique and beautiful.

Colleen McCullough "The First Man in Rome", "The Grass Crown", "Anthony and Cleopatra", "Ceasar" - I like the world of ancient Rome and these books make me feel like I am actually there for a moment. Thanks to these books Colleen has become my favorite writer. I also like her "Thorn Birds", but I think the ancient Rome series is her best work.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like action and adventure books, historical novels, but I have discovered recently thrillers of John Sandford and very liked his "Prey" series.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the outskirts of a small city. My house was surrounded by beautiful gardens and forest parks. I spent my whole childhood playing in the gardens or parks. I used to play, study, walk, and have picnics with my friends in the gardens. I have written my first story there, sitting under the cherry blossoms tree. It was beautiful and inspiring place. Every time I write I imagine I sit under this tree.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first story when I was ten. It was at school when as a part of a project the teacher asked us to write a different end to a short novel. As the novel was very sad and moving, I rewrote it completely, making it less sad. My teacher and my classmates liked it.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have written two adult novels before I wrote "The Adventures of Socrates the Cat" and never thought I would write for children. One day I was sitting in the garden and felt like writing, but I didn't have any ideas. Then, out of nowhere came to the garden two cats and started to play on my lawn. They were so funny that I thought I should write about cats.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing to me is the process of writing itself; exploring my imagination, challenging myself in creating the world that may or may not exist, building personalities of the characters, and playing with words is the greatest joy.
Who are your favorite authors?
Colleen McCullough, John Sandford, Paul Sussman, Mikhail Bulgakov, Margaret Mitchell
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I observe the world and make notes just to write about it later.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact there is so many things, events and people I haven't discovered, experienced or met yet and hope that someday I will write about them all.
