Interview with Doris

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in South Florida, where I walked barefooted on its hot sand until I was forced by my mom to put on shoes, and where I learned to swim in its warm oceans. I spent a lot of time climbing to the top of trees or sneaking away to lay on the roof of our house to watch the clouds drift by. I think finding solitude in nature added an instinctual awareness of my connection to God.
When did you first start writing?
My earliest memory of writing was the letters I would write to God as a child. I must admit that some were pretty weighted with guilt.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Daughters of Judah is a celebration of eight women of the Bible, some more familiar than others, who become more endearing by revealing their humanity through their stories, songs and dance.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The potential to reach a global audience, to maintain ownership of my work and to join the family of indie authors who have paved the way for me.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me seeing a character come to life for me and my readers.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm an actor, so I spend time in classes and auditioning. I also watch way too much television.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a short story inspired by a neighbor who was a good friend of my grandmother. She lost two sons in the Vietnam war. I'll never forget the picture of her attacking the soldier that came to her door for the second time.
