Interview with Anton Swanepoel

Published 2014-07-30.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am currently lazily backpacking Asia. I have done four months in Cambodia, and rode all over with a motorbike where I visited over 300 temples and took over 7000 pictures. I hopped over to Vietnam, and did a month long motorbike trip, going from Saigon to Hanoi, and back, then hopped back to Cambodia. Now three months in Cambodia after my Vietnam trip, and planning a trip to Laos. I just love being on the open road with a motorbike, and meeting other travelers.
What is your writing process?
I am very mobile. I wrote 13 books on a cell phone on a dive boat and compressor filling station. Currently I use an iPad mini, and a laptop to write and edit. I write when a scene pops in my head. When it does, i write a note on my IPad, then e-mail it to myself. The scene can be as small as a few words, or it could end up being over 5000 words. I just keep on writing bits of the book, with a general idea where i want it to go, then later when i have enough scenes, I put them together, and fill in any missing gaps.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my iPad mini, and mostly read on it. But I also use an iPod touch 5Gen at times.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am still growing up. Was born in Pretoria, South Africa. I lived on a farm for a while, until we moved to the outskirts of the city. Later I moved down to Durban by the coast, and stayed there for a number of years before I did a seven year stunt as a technical dive instructor in cayman Islands.

My upbringing have tough me to be very flexible, and to move around obstacles. It is nice to sit in a coffee shop or office and write on a nice PC, but you do not need that if you do not have it.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing short stories for friends and myself back in the early 90s. Did have a dream of traveling the world back then, and just writing. Life got in the way, and time slipped by. It was not until 2010 that I started to put together what i have written and publish it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom of deciding what you want to write, and get it published. Not everyone can write a block buster book, but there are loads of good authors out there. Unfortunately many do not get published because traditional publishing houses spend most of their time with block buster authors. It is just business.

With indie publishing, you can get your book in front of readers, that can give you feedback and allow you to better your writing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to live in the story and escape. I go into it, and on fight or scary scenes, my heart goes wild and i have to take a rest myself after a good scene.

For my non fiction books, it is about experiencing new things and learning as i research for the book. Some of the books i focus on places I travel to. I have written a book about Machu Picchu, and Cambodia, and are busy with one about the temples of Cambodia and motorbiking Vietnam and Cambodia. I love it when i can help other people with my books.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are my inspiration to write, and keep going. Writing is hard work, and if you are doing it full time while backpacking, the temptation to skip writing today, for tomorrow, is real. When things do not go right, such as delays in writing, formatting issues, mistakes that slipped through editing, and yes, negative reviews, it helps to get a nice e-mail or Facebook message or review that shows that someone appreciated your book. And that it helped them.
What are you working on next?
I multitask. I have eight books I am working on at the moment. Although first i am rewriting my first two Laura books with new skills i have learned. Then, three other books are getting the most attention, one being the third book in my Laura series (done, just editing), then I am working on a book for motorbiking Vietnam and Cambodia, and also a book about temples in Cambodia.

As I go along I save tips about traveling, for a travel book that is on the back burner. Then there is a love story book that will heavily lean on my seven years as a dive instructor, and lastly i have a trilogy of a Viking king.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
For me, I need inspiration to get into bed. Even in bed I may lie down to sleep, then an idea pops in my head, and i need to write it down. I have my iPad in a life-proof case because I constantly fall asleep on it. What gets me away from writing? Food, I love good food. Then a motorbike ride or meeting up with friends.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love sci-fi, and action books. I hate thrillers where someone goes and hacks people up and serial killer books. There is enough of that in the news, I do not need to read it. I also love magic, mages, wizards, and knights.
Describe your desk
My lap. Honestly I write when and idea pops in my head. I could be standing in an isle in a shop and get an idea, then quickly take out my iPod touch and write it down. I do have a desk back home, but rarely use it. The only fixed places i do tend to write for long periods are at a coffee shop or in the back of a restaurant.
