Interview with Alexis Pettway

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I have been writing ever since I can remember! I wrote my first story in the first grade. The book was called "A star is born." The story was about how I was born and who was there. I actually still have the binded book! This was before I begin writing poetry
What is your writing process?
I write mainly based off of my emotions. When I was younger I used to sleep with notebooks and pens under my pillow. When I sleep, at times, words just come to me. It usually happens when my thoughts are focused on a specific situation or feeling. Other times I meditate. I intentionally focus on specific thoughts and emotions and I just let the words flow. When I'm at peace, the words just flow and to me that's the purest form of art, of poetry.
After I get the first draft down, I may go right back in and edit it or I may leave it for a few days and then go back to edit it.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read psychology books. Even though I am a poet I LOVE reading and learning about psychology. I think I'm slightly obsessed with it. I'm so fascinated with the mind, how it works and functions. The mind is very complex and extraordinary in the way it copes with everything that gets thrown at it.
When did you first start writing?
I first starting writing poetry when I was in the 7th grade. My mind had a thing for wondering. I think it still does. So, I was in geography class and my mind wondered to the weather outside. In those moments I wrote my first poem titled "God's work". I got the title because my grandmother would say that when it was raining or lightning that God was doing his work. For that, we always had to shut off everything in the house until the thunder and lightning stopped.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My first and currently only book, "Journey Thru Love" follows me through my first relationship. The poems chronicle my emotional journey during the relationship. It tells the story of every emotion I experienced during that time and also my growth and realization of certain truths.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always wanted to become an author. When I finally made a decision to become an author, I researched traditional publishing companies as well as self publishing companies. The freedom of having control over what I'm putting out and how it looks motivated me to go through the self publishing route
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy of writing is releasing my emotions and then seeing the beautiful product of it. I sometimes refer to my writing as my outlet. Sometimes emotions can become a heavy burden, so writing and releasing them is such a freedom to me. It lightens the load when it gets to heavy. After I've transferred my emotions from my mind to the ink and paper, I'm always amazed at what I've created and there lies my joy
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Since the release of my book, I'v been doing less writing because I am so busy marketing and promoting my brand, my book and poetry writing services. I am also doing a lot of research from websites and other authors that have more experience and that have large platforms which help new authors like me. I do a lot of reading on these websites and blogs. So when I'm not writing, I am doing everything I can to build my audience and brand
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The most effective way I've marketed my book is through signing up and paying for vending events. They are fun, I get to meet a lot of people, network, and sale my book all at the same time. I get to talk with people, hear their stories and make some great connections
What are you working on next?
I am planning on releasing the second half of Journey Thru Love. The poems are done. Its just a matter of getting all the other pieces together and then getting them published.
I am also working on a chap books for some speaking engagements at high schools.
For those that do not know, a chap book is a small collection of poems used by poets for promotional purposes or for those who aren't ready to publish a full book.

Funny thing about Love is that we rarely see it coming especially for the first time. It sidelines our hearts and re-positions our minds. The journey of falling in love is a road we all travel and discover the happiness, the pain, the countless emotions that unravel. Journey Thru Love takes you down my path of falling in love for the first time.
